Year 3 no more excuses

I don’t think think “excuses” is ever the right term.

I think some people just want to say the there is nothing that would explain a disappointing performance.

That’s just not true.

LSU enters the season with many question marks including a new QB, two new coordinators, a very weak on paper DL and defensive backfield and mostly unproven WRs.

You can blame Kelly all you want but this team isn’t the picture of his program looking the best it’s going to look. Frankly if you think that, I’d say you are in denial.

More likely you are just making a very over-simplistic point that because he’s in year 3 all problems should have been fixed. I’ve got some bad news for you though…

Brian Kelly isn't getting fired anytime soon, but if he loses this game and fails to make the playoff I will really question if he will be able to win a national championship here.

On paper, do you really think this is a playoff team?

I don’t know if we win a NC but looking at his recruiting I think that’s when this program is fully stocked.

I actually think this is the worst team Kelly has had here.

The expectations for this team seem to be out of line IMO.

His "first" recruiting class are now juniors.

They took 14 portal guys(Kelly has been great in the portal, objectively). A lot of these guys were needed as stop gap, many of them are gone.

7 other players have transferred.

He still has not had his own homegrown QB.

2026 is probably a barometer season, when the talent and holes finally catch up and even out.

I have no idea. There are key members of this team that I haven’t seen play much against SEC competition.

I mean, that would be a part of a “on paper” analysis. Obviously things could turn out different than a fair expectation both positively or negatively. That’s why they play the game.

But, any rational analysis of LSU has to acknowledge that there are a large number of significant unknowns.

No it wouldn't.

If fired after year 4 LSU would owe him roughly $50M (90% of his remaining contract).

Being on the hot seat doesn’t mean you get fired. He could cool it off with a CFP berth in year 4, but an 8-4 year would get people to start doubting him

I 100% agree and I have basically been saying that basically that exact thing for a while now. My comment about him being able to win a natty here is in reference to a variety of things. If I absolutely had to give a regular season record prediction, I would probably go 9-3.

Exactly.

Last year I was very bullish on LSU's playoff chances. The pieces looked to be in place. LSU returned a starting, experienced, QB. Virtually the entire offense returned. They were combining that with a DC who had produced a defense who carried much of the burden in 2022. Most expected LSU would have an improved offense and, at least, a similar defense. The extremes in both directions were completely unexpected.

That was coupled with the fact every other SEC contender had a new starting QB (Alabama - Milroe, Georgia - Beck; Tennessee - Milton); A&M was coming off a losing season, Miss St. and Auburn were rebuilding with new HCs. Florida struggled in 2022. The path was very much there for LSU.

Taking off the P&G glasses, this team does NOT look like a playoff team. That's not to say they can't be. I certainly see a path if everything goes well. But it's foolish to EXPECT them to be such.

If there is no concern of losing your job then there is nothing "hot" about your status. Fans doubting a coach doesn't mean much. Hell, if that was the case BK was on the "hot seat" immediately after losing to FSU in 2022. Unless that "doubt" is among those fans with the means to stroke a $50M check, "JimTiger72" doubting BK's ability to win big at LSU and expressing such on a message board is of ZERO material relevance.

I think 3 years is enough time so you shouldn’t be terrible, but I also don’t know if this is the best team Kelly will ever put together.

Brian Kelly is closer to retirement than not. His 10 year contract will likely be his last. We don't have 8 years to wait for championships to come, nor should we accept that given how much he's being paid and the unprecedented advantages he has with recruiting and roster building.

Hard to argue, as a LSU fan, I want them to go 11-1 or better, but the reality may end up being they lack the talent on defense to compete for a title.

Yeah, like a 2011 vs #3 Oregon statement
