For the Corpus Christi Hooks tonight. The guy is definitely proving he can play at this level. I don't think the Astros fast track him or anything, but he's off to a nice start.

He's a great player but I don't know where the Astros put him because they have Correa and Altuve at SS and 2B. In the end I think he will probably be used in a trade for something.

Correa will end up playing 3B

Correa has the physique of a 3B I think. Even if Alex does get traded...he is on the path toward the majors. I enjoy seeing former
Tigers succeed...no matter the organization.

I'm not sure why you'd draft a guy top 5 a year ago just to use him as trade bait

But it won't be nearly as soon as people think.

Because you would get a lot in return. At #2, you take best player available and sort things out later. This isn't the NFL where you draft for need b/c you expect your 1st rounder to be a starter during his rookie year.

We're talking about a top 5 pick. No they are not generally used as trade bait, even in baseball

This is only true when there's a player like Kris Bryant of Strasburg that at the time are the no doubt the top picks in the draft no matter what, it wasn't like that with Bregman, yea Bregman was very good and everyone knew he was a 1st rounder but it wouldn't have been suprising if he was taken a little later in the 1st then #2 overall

But that's pretty much what you do at the Major League level. You don't draft by need, generally. You draft the best talent available.

Astros are thinking playoffs/World series. They need pitching. Dont be so sure.

they traded 1.1 Mark Appel recently. They are deep enough to withstand a Bregman trade, whether it happens or not.

Not generally, no, but Dansby Swanson has already been traded and he went #1 in that draft.

nobody does this. you draft a guy top 5 that will sign for a reasonable contract (and Bregman indeed did that).

when the Astros intentionally tanked for a 4 or 5 year period they had an extended period of time to select the best talent available and not just in the first round. their strategy is simple and I think they'll do it again down the road. imo, it's a "frick the fans" strategy. when you have the number 1 (or close) pick for 5 years and have traded any player with a pulse for prospects you can't miss having a quality team.

Bregman fell into this situation and he, along with the rest of the Astros are "expendable". if he continues to progress and one of the other middle infielders comes up for the big money contracts, look for the big money guy to get traded and the $400,000 guy (Bregman) to move in.

let's just call this moneyball, which is 90% bull shite.

Hope they move him up to AAA soon. Their AAA team is playing here in July, I'd love to get to see Bregman play again.

As an Astros fan, I hope we keep Bregman. You guys are right. As well as Bregman plays well, he'll be in the majors no matter what, but I'm hoping the Astros end up keeping him anyway. With Correa, Bregman, and Altuve, that would be one absolutely legit infield. I can see Correa sliding to 3B too.
