Who are the projected closers?

It will be one or some of your more talented arms.

I think that Guidry is firmly in the mix due to what he showed last year and the fact that he didn't really turn the corner in the infield this fall. I expect them to ramp up his arm work prior to the start of spring practice and not have to bring him along as slowly as last season when pitching was basically forced upon him just to see the field after our staff had some losses.

There is no shortage of arm talent on this years staff. I think it's obvious to say that Hurd and Holman have solidified themselves as weekend starter candidates and Jump is right up there behind them IMO. So that rules those guys out for consistent availability to close games out.

Johnson and Moffett are intriguing prospects for this role as they both can throw gas. Questions remain on Moffett's control but he seems to have taken a step forward with it this summer and fall and has recovered nicely when he had stretches of hard time finding the zone. Johnson may prove to be too valuable of a pitcher to limit strictly to this role, but the fact that he has a full 3 seasons to play here could make it a way to ease him into SEC baseball. You have to also keep in mind that he didn't throw a lot of innings at IMG last year and this fall so it may suit him favorably in this regard by keeping him in his comfort zone and having a big role on this team.

Loer, Herring, Ack, Woods and Dutton seen to be suited for that long relief role or as a bridge guy to get to the next pitcher/closer. Bronzini and Little have both shown the ability to strike out batters but I am not sure that Jay would count on them in a high pressure win or lose situation unless the continue to progress and that is certainly possible.

Nate Ackenhausen - Pitched 30.2 innings last season. Mostly in a relief role with some injury time along the way. Made his only two starts of the season in Omaha, but was a starter as a sophomore in JUCO (wasn't a full time starting pitcher as a freshman there because he also played 1B/DH and his team had 3 studs in the rotation).

Setting the total at 60 innings. Is he over or under that in 2024?

ETA: And while he is a similar pitcher to Riley Cooper in many ways, he's not similar in rubber-armedness. He hasn't shown much bounce back or back-to-back ability yet.

I have only read the OP, so I have a question.

Has it been pointed out that the OP is sleeping on Griffin Herring? The kid gave us some important innings last year and I expect his role to increase this season. He’s going to have a great career at LSU.

I'll take the under. I don't think he wins a starting spot. I'm think maybe 45-50 ish innings for him.

Last year Christian Little got 8 but pitched 34 innings.

Riley Cooper got 3 but pitched 61 innings.

Normally starts are an indicator, but who knows, ha.

I'm going to assume that Hurd and Holman are both around 85-90 innings. Holman was around 85 last year and missed some time. Hurd was in the 60s but just being more consistent should bump that number up. I wasn't planning to put them into the over/under convo.

The next candidates are Cam Johnson total of 35 innings and Aiden Moffett total of 20 innings.

For context, those are the innings totals for Blake Money and Sam Dutton from last year.

You can bet that Jay is looking for a rubber arm like Cooper. He absolutely loved having that at his disposal.

I wonder if Loer could be that guy.

Otherwise, I think it's more of a strength in numbers.

I think Cam Johnson is our closer this spring and he may take the bump in the seventh inning and work through the lineup once, 9 up 9 down

Yikes

When watching Little you can see his stuff is fantastic. High Velocity FB, great curve, slider/cutter. Looks unhittable. Then the next batter come sup and he is not even close to the plate. Remember he was fabulous very early in the year closing games and the it just went away. If somehow he can stay consistent look out

I agree. He looked like Tom Glavine on Sunday. He had 7ks in 8 or 9 batters. Absolutely looked unhittable. I did not see him any other time in the fall but that was one impressive outing Sunday

I think they work Cam as a starter and stretch him early in the season to see where that goes, so I will go with the over for him.

Moffett is interesting at that number. The potential says he can be over with some consistency. I'll go with the over on him. With his potential I feel they get him a lot of work in the midweek trying to find the consistency. So even if he isn't getting weekend innings, I think he gets midweek innings.
