Not really and the dude asks that question of both teams every year.

I've literally been in the media room and interviewed players both football and baseball this year. The guy who asked the question is a moron and could have asked what they had for breakfast which would have been a better question

Man throwing that little Coach Johnson bit in there tells me all I need to know about how badly this team wants to beat Coastal LFGO

I didn’t mind coastal answer, thought it was pretty funny actually

what did everyone want them to say? People get butt hurt over stupid shite

Anything but complete silence and then a really low hanging stupid joke. "Not a lot!" alright man, yeah you said the first thought that popped into your head that everyone else had already thought better than to say. You're so funny.

And then the follow-up answer after things had settled down was bizarre.

Nobody wanted them to say anything other than "Respect the team, going to be a hell of a game." These press conferences are ultimately useless, but there's an unspoken rule of decorum that only those who can't seem to understand that they aren't the center of attention have issues wrapping their heads around.

Isn’t Vitello surprisingly consistent in his respect for opponents in press conferences? I’ve admittedly only seen a few of them

To the media, yes, but his teams play with zero respect for their opponents. Win or lose.

All he had to say is they’re pretty good or they wouldn’t be here and there’s no story

Jeez you guys are so butthurt over this shite. We are the favorites, we are the known entity, of course the "upstarts" are not as polished.

It’s not hard to be respectful and not become a news story.

It’s literally only a news story because LSU fans like you want it to be. No neutral observer thinks they said anything out of line or disrespectful. Every credible LSU media member I’ve seen has also said they have no problem with it, including former players like Mahtook. Unless you want to consider guys like Blake Ruffino credible media guys.

doesn't LSU give training to the athletes on how to handle the media?

Well that’s just not true it’s on several news outlets that have nothing to do with LSU. Not that I care about the quote at all. It just kind of came out as an awkward response. But whatever people are allowed to be awkward.

Interesting. Can you link them? I haven’t seen any negative comments about what they said outside of LSU fans.

Nothing the Coastal players said was wrong. It was a stupid fricking question to ask

I actually agree that it was a stupid question, but players should be drilled to give these kinds in benign, canned answers, no matter what. Go listen to all of our interviews from yesterday- other than Brown going on the “scholars” tangent, they are all variations of this.

I didn’t mean they saw it in a negative light. Just the fact that it is a talking point on several platforms. Which makes it a news story

frick off. I didn’t take the Coastal comments personally. It’s just stupid to say anything that can be perceived as a shot and it shows poor coach preparation. Even though it was nothing, the media and fans are still focusing on it.

On the other side, you don’t see anyone replaying LSU interviews. Brown got a few seconds of attention for the “we’re no scholars” comment, but that has nothing to do with the game.

Respond in canned coach speak and move along. Never give anyone anything of substance. There’s no reason to ever do that.

Saying it’s dumb to put something out there that people will talk about has nothing to do with being butthurt. Anyone fan who’s legitimately mad about that comment is just grasping at straws.

But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t also a dumb thing to do. I was just pointing out that Braswell, and the rest of our team as well, were prepared and handled any media engagements like pros.

Do you think what Kade Anderson said could have been perceived as a shot?

Unfortunately for LSU this is totally irrelevant.

It’s a story because the media and fans on social media will grasp onto ANYTHING that’s out of the norm. That’s why most big time programs work with their players on how to handle interviews.

Nothing Will Campbell said before last year’s USC game was offensive or derogatory toward the other team, either. That didn’t stop the comments from becoming a talking point, especially after we lost.

Maybe Kelly could take a lesson from Jay here.
