Bottom line -- you can't win without QB play

When I say "win," I mean win championships. You better pick 'em right, or be able to develop them once they arrive. Otherwise, you are on the outside looking in.

In the SECW, you have Prescott, Marshall, Wallace, Sims, and now Allen. Only one is a Heisman candidate, and the rest have flaws. But they all have above average QB skills -- ability to throw the ball, read defenses, execute the game plan, and in most cases to run when called upon. Nationally, you have Mariota, Barrett, Boykin, Winston, Petty and others.

EVERY QB makes mistakes, some more often than others, and some more critically than others. But you MUST have a QB who can execute position requirements.

The ugly reality is that except for inheriting Flynn and signing Mett because he had no other good options, Miles has failed in this area. It's not an indictment of his character, and it doesn't mean he should be fired. But it has limited -- and will continue to limit -- what he and his program can accomplish.

It's extremely frustrating to see other programs identify, recruit, and develop QBs. In the SECW, with the coaches, QBs, and defenses LSU faces throughout the conference slate, QB play will be the no. 1 limiting factor. LSU can run it and play defense with anybody, but they can't and won't "win" until Miles and his staff figure it out.

Upvote and I am truly at a loss that we STILL can't recruit a capable QB.

Agreed, "the fish rots from the head down" and in CFB that's the HBC and the QB.

Sims and Marshall should not be in that discussion.

I'm with you. Fans bitched for years about the OC, play calling, etc. To his credit, Miles has tried to make changes and adapt.

But the one constant has been the consistent lack of skill and execution at the QB position.

It's a head-scratcher.

Actually, Les and his staff are capable of doing just that and getting a talented QB and they've done it before. They just cannot develop them into something that will not frick you over or prevent you from winning games.

Imo, This will be Les Miles Achilles heel and there's no evidence that will ever change for the rest of his career at LSU.

As I wrote, EVERY quarterback makes mistakes. You're not going to get perfect performance. But Marshall is capable of making plays at QB with his feet and arm. He's made a TON of them.

Neither Jennings nor Harris were considered chopped liver when we recruited them out of high school.

Joshua Dobbs and Kyle Allen went into very hostile atmospheres as freshmen, excelled, and won... by passing the ball... frequently. The attitude of THEIR head coaches? You're our quarterback, we recruited you to do something you're about to do. Do it.

What sort of confidence and performance can we expect from OUR quarterbacks when we pass, for the most part, as something we'd rather not do?

Mett

Already had very extensive development before coming to LSU.

The issue isn't recruiting talent, developing it is.

I agree. You can't treat pass get like a trick play and then expect guys to execute in the clutch part of games.

Miles only wants dual threat QB's...I don't understand the need for Cam Cameron. Two weeks to prepare for a home game against Bama, and our QB and offense looked like total garbage?

I should have included "and develop".

Mettenberger was a JUCO transfer who already had plenty of development.

We have yet to recruit a freshman QB under Les and develop him into even a decent QB.
