“UGA, Texas, Oregon, Bama, and OSU will always be on top. The school and fans are not scared to spend money.”

That comment in another thread made me start thinking about the question implied in the title. I’m hoping people will chime in and give their thoughts and opinions on what all it would take over the short/mid/long term as far as building a system goes to create an institutionally elite football program. Money and time are a given, but for people who have given this thought and are willing to help me understand what that might look like it would be appreciated.

Texas on top? Oregon on top? Since when? Texas hasn't sniffed anything in 20+ years. In fact, the only reason they've been relevant recently is their money and name. That's it. They made the playoffs 1 time. Past that, tall they've done for 20+ years is underachieve. Oregon hasn't done anything either but more recently they've been successful at getting in the playoffs and not doing anything with it other than getting embarrassed.

I didn’t start the thread to discuss the merits of what was quoted, clearly, by everything written below it.

A few thoughts:

Most people say cleaning up in the portal is a key but Georgia added 9 from the portal. Ohio St added 17. Their systems are consistent and constant in coaching, culture and ability to evaluate, bring in talent and get buy in.

That’s another massive piece. Great coaching. I know everybody wants this and tries to attract and hire the absolute best but truth is truly elite coaches aren’t plentiful.

Finally, time and consistency to their process to build winning culture over time.

Everyone wants to win big now and with the new era of college sports that’s the belief. But truthfully, fast tracking titles are still the extreme minority. I know, I know…Indiana. Don’t highlight the one exception and ignore the remaining 99% of programs that aren’t doing it.

If LK can do it here- it won’t happen overnight. Fans screaming about millions spent on rosters and the new age of college sports won’t change that.

To be fair he said he got the statement from another post. I think his main question is what are the traits that are constants for the actually elite programs.

It's more about team chemistry and long term cohesion.

Indiana would have a word. Been a minute since they’ve lost.

OSU has a MASSIVE fanbase and they are rabid. I’ve lived all over the country and never been anywhere there wasn’t an Ohio State bar.

Learn to write. You responded to 3 different posters with the same Learn to read response so obvioulsy your post message is not what you intended.

As for my post, Oregon is just a massive Nike money advertising facade making it look cool to be a duck fan. Cool colors, crazy uni's, high energy team people... winning is desired but not necessary

I appreciate your nuanced reply to the actual question without some emotional reactivity to a quote that was taken from another individual.

The right system and a winning culture were my takeaways from your response. Very practical. Thanks.

Cheers.
