2006 Final Four, and the Brady Melt.

in 1976, Rein became the youngest college football head coach upon his hiring by North Carolina State. Guiding the NC State Wolfpack football team, Rein was an advocate of the coaching philosophy of Ohio State's Woody Hayes for whom Rein played. During Rein's four years at NC State, he led the team to two bowl games, defeating Iowa State in the 1977 Peach Bowl and defeating Pittsburgh in the 1978 Tangerine Bowl. In Rein's final year at NC State, his team won the Atlantic Coast Conference championship.-- from Wikipedia.
He was viewed by most as an up and coming coach-- much like Saban when LSU hired him. He was a breath of fresh air after a long coaching stint by Charlie Mac. He was young, dynamic, energetic and had an immediate impact on recruiting.

We've had some awful luck regarding football coaches over the years.
Dietzel leaving, Rein's death, missing on Bowden & Spurrier (and promoting Archer), saban wanting to get back in the college game when bama was looking for a coach, and obviously our current situation. Damn.

Skip Bertman should've bought out Les Miles' contract after 2 years and rehired Saban, Sexton said he wanted to come back.

If Matthieu doesn't get booted in 2012 we're probably back in the championship game

1987 MW Regional Final. Hang on that 9 pt lead with 5:00, we go to the Superdome. UNLV and Syracuse were better teams, but somehow I think that team would have taken it all in New Orleans.
Now, as for some of the other candidates I've seen here, unless you had one heck of a crystal ball the day those decisions were made they need qualifiers.
Now was Steve Spurrier a better coach than Mike Archer? Of course. But in Dec 1986 Spurrier wasn't an A-lister.Yea, he had success with the Tampa Bay team in the USFL,but so did Rollie Dotch.
Remember while LSU was looking for a head coach for the 1987 so was Alabama,Texas and Southern Cal.Spurrier wound up going to Duke. It wasn't like LSU was alone in eventually under estimating Spurrier. And for those of you who embrace with gusto what you deem an LSU "failure" remember Mike Shanahan expressed interest in the job, too.
The not rehiring Saban in Dec 06 is crazy. Why would LSU fire a guy who had gone 22-4 for a guy to comeback who had flirted with leaving every year ? Saban's last season at LSU was rather underachieving, too.

Oklahoma St. losing to Iowa State in 2011. We could've gone down as the best team in history.
This game quite possibly changed the landscape of college football.
At the time Les was 3-2 vs Saban. Had 1 championship at LSU to 0 for Nick at Alabama. If OKST beats Iowa State, LSU destroys OKST in the championship game, and that LSU team goes down as the best team in history. Les Miles would have been 3-2 vs Saban and would have had had 2 to Sabans 1 Natty at LSU, and Bama has 0 in the BCS era.
Instead, Bama gets the rematch and wins. Les is 3-3 vs Saban and Saban has 2 to Les' 1 Natty. That rematch brought about the playoff system. LSU drops behind Alabama and Nick doesn't look back.
So the opportunity to play OKST in the BCS national championship game was the biggest missed opportunity in the history of LSU sports, and quite possibly college football.

False.

Nick had one in 2009
True, my mistake but the point still stands. LSU would have been ahead in BCS era championships 3-1 and LSU would have had all the momentum as the best team to ever step on the field. And that label would have been very hard to deny.

LSU fans...we love living our mistakes over and over and over again.

Skip would have been roasted at the time but exalted 2 years later.
I consider this THE biggest missed opportunity

This one will always haunt me. I was in Cincinnati for that one. I still maintain its the biggest screw job I can remember. After Knight went ballistic, we could not get a call. They were holding and setting moving screens on Woodside and Oliver Brown to get Alford open and not one was called. Conversely, if Wood or Oliver got close enough to breathe on Alford it was a foul. Despite that still should have won and gone to the Superdome for the Final 4. Kills me to this day.
