That will be a problem all year. Weakest position that we knew about were the LBs.

I'm hoping it was a wakeup call for House. Playing that far off the receivers. CNs played well for most part but scheme was big factor.

Not sure if Kelly dictated such a weak and soft D, but needs to change

Te/we/rb right over the middle is what got them out of trouble.

I wonder oh he thought that our DL would wreck shite all night and having them play that far back would lead to pick opportunities from poor throws?

That's what I noticed the most, playing 5-7 yards off the receivers they'll eat us alive with slants and they did.

That all stems from a soft coverage at the line of scrimmage all night long. When LSU would actually walk up the DBs and take away the east short throws they had much better success. I don’t recall a deep throw completion by FSU. QB wasn’t at all past 15 yds. DC obviously didn’t trust his corners. It will be a long day vs Miss St. If they don’t get this figured out. You have to make the QB hold the ball to get pressure.

How much of that was the LSU defense or Jordan Travis improvising? It seems like Jordan Travis made most of those first downs. They were 11 of 17 on third down which is too much for a defense to allow. Got to keep that shite below 50%. If LSU keeps it below 50% then then FSU is looking at 7 out of 15 or 6 out of 14 which is where your defense needs to be.

How many missed sacks did we have? Also, several of the conversions were blown assignments, two people guarding the same person leaving the other wide open. Tons of room for improvement in film study this week.

Exactly.

Matt House is calling defenses like this the Kansas City Chiefs. These kids do not have the time to put in during the week to perfect zone defenses. I can't stand the defensive philosophy in CFB of zone a lot early then mix in man. No. Man up a lot, early and often, then mix in zone. Take advantage of the kids athleticism and man them up and stop relying on them to think (which zone does). Zone forces kids to be reactive instead of aggressive.

I would love to know the conversion rate on 3rd and 7 or longer. I think they converted every single one. Every time we sat in a soft zone, and they hit a WR/TE in the same spot.

Going to be a long year if we play Lou Tepper defense.

You have to give credit where credit is due. LSU tried to blitz/put pressure on Travis on several of the 3rd downs...he made some good plays under pressure.

For me, the entire game it felt like the play-callers (on both sides) were calling plays like they weren't quite sure as to what their guys could execute. That is somewhat understandable give LSU has two new coordinators, two new systems, and several new players.

I don't think House was confident his secondary could hold up in man so he played a lot of zone behind the blitzes. That creates holes and you hope the QB can't find and/or hit them quick enough when he's under pressure. Travis did on several.

The LBs were virtually non-existent in the games. However, I think LSU will improve now that House has a better understanding of what his guys do well/don't do well after watching them in a game. I'm not saying the defense will be dominant. But I think they continue to figure things out.

They were using misdirection all night on offense really taking advantage of the fact this was our defense's first game. It had our guys lookin unsure and held any talent advantage we may have had in check. I hate using it as an excuse, but FSU capitalized on this advantage in a huge way with their gameplan.

Kelly even talked about that in his post game presser. They were able to get to Travis but unable to get him on the ground. He would then scramble AND his receivers always seemed to work back toward the QB typically ending up in the soft coverage areas in the middle of the field.

It's a good point you are making because in the NFL on third and long (7 or more) defenses tend to play the sticks. They will allow for the underneath stuff to be caught then make the tackle before the offensive player makes the line to gain. The Saints are really good at this.

It's the right defensive call because it forces the WRs to choose the underneath route. The defense has to anticipate and meet the WR at the spot. IDK if college kids are good enough to do that. Apparently it takes too much thinking and practice and college kids do not have the time to perfect this kind of defense.
