Big OOC games like this Saturday’s

Everyone craps on programs for refusing to schedule big OOC games which is fair. Let’s give Clemson and LSU their credit for going out and their scheduling over the past decade.
I remember Clemson having home and homes with Georgia, Auburn, A&M and now LSU.
I also remember LSU scheduling Wisconsin, Miami, fsu, Texas (Pre-SEC) and USC.
It’s impossible to project how an opponent will be several years in advance but schools like LSU & Clemson realize that it’s more about the opponent’s brand and history. Getting to play other historical programs is fun regardless of how they looked in recent years.
I love risking it and playing these games. seeing LSU line up against any major top 25 brand in the sport in a MEANINGFUL game is always cool.
I especially prefer these to be played on campuses so big middle finger to the cash grab neutral sites! However if that’s the only way to get the other schools to agree then let’s do it. Labor Day weekend games in an indoor stadium aren’t the worst ideas though.
Here’s to hoping LSU doesn’t fall into the trap of scheduling weak OOC games. See you next season in Houston at Reliant stadium to kick UH’s arse in a revenge game!

I was thinking about this the other day. IMO, these games are going to become more rare unless the CFP starts taking strength of schedule into account. Sucks, because these games are fun and make week 1 something to look forward to instead of playing BFE State CC, though I understand why teams don't play them. Hell, just look at Notre Dame's schedule. It's embarrassing that a major college football program is playing a schedule like that. That said, unless something crazy happens, they're pretty much a lock for the playoffs this year.
I hate to break it to ya, but that's likely where we're headed with Kiffin at the helm. I don't blame him at all, especially with the 9th conference game, but it does suck.

This game likely doesn’t get scheduled if Verge had a crystal ball back in 2018 for realignment and 9 game schedule.
I wish they’d continue the trend, but Houston and SMU cover the non conference P4 game for next few years and going to assume Tulane is in ACC by 2030.

Until the playoff committee changes the criteria. All teams will avoid these games going forward. Its the unfortunate truth.

The SEC made it a point, if not required, that their teams schedule at least one non-conf. game against a power conf. opponent. I'm not sure LSU had a choice to not do so. However, it wasn't just altruistic. Most of those game cited were neutral site games...which can be lucrative for the schools.
What CFB really needs is what we have with LSU and Clemson here, a true home and home series. Having this game in Tiger Stadium is FAR better than it being played in the stale environment of Atlanta, or New Orleans, or Charlotte, or anywhere else.
Unfortunately, the CFP committee has made it clear SOS is irrelevant to their analysis. Number of losses are. It doesn't make a lot of sense from a competitive standpoint to play a power conf. non-conf opponent. Indiana is the poster child for that. Play an incredibly weak non-conf. schedule to give yourself 2 games of cushion just in case you lose 2 games to the 2-4 really good Big 10 teams you have to play.
The CFP committee has to reward teams who play tough schedules (like the NCAA Tournament committee). Unless and until that happens these game will go away.
