2003 clearly had a much better defense
2003 had an amazing running game and GREAT protection.
2003 had better receivers IMO
2003 Vincent > 2007 Hester

2003 team was also healthy all year, with the exception of Joseph Addai, and Justin Vincent stepped up for him.

2007 team lost Early Doucet early in the season and then Glenn Dorsey went down with the chop block. He still played, but he defintley wasn't the same player.
The 07 team played the first half of the season without the best offensive player and the second half of the season with its best defensive player playing nowhere near 100%.

When healthy, the 2007 team was just as dominant. 2003 was more dominant defensivley while the 2007 team was more dominant offensively.

I'm still curious as to how the 07 season would have played out had Doucet and Dorsey not gotten injured.

I love how quickly people seem to forget that if Mauck was qb the entire '02 season, LSU would have probably won the SEC title that season. He was the mising piece after he went down with an injury. Mauck also has a better win percentage. Seems to me like a lot of people that I'm sure were calling for Perriloux to be in the game are now acting like they have always been Flynn supporters. Mauck was called on as a Freshman and won the SEC title against Tennessee in 2001 as well. Flynn had one good season compared to an amazing career by Mauck.

SEC W maybe, but I don't think we beat UGA in the SEC CG.

Why do people forget Mauck wasn't the only injury? Hell we were playing Clayton at S in the Cotton Bowl because some one got kicked off the team, name is escaping me at the moment ETA: Damien James

Mauck before he got hurt, and Flynn after that.

I think Trev Faulk also quit mid-season putting our defense in a bind. I thought Clayton played defense to shut down Roy Williams, because he had such a huge size advantage over our db's? I am pretty sure it is at least part of the reason he played defense that game.

Matt Mauck is a member of our alumni group here in Denver. I'll see him at our crawfish boil next month and I'll ask his expert opinion.

If JaMarcus plays his Senior year we go 14-0.

Damien James ran off the week before the Auburn game.

Trev Faulk wasn't on the team in 02. Worst miss ever.

Flynn.

But remember Saban is fundamentally a defensive coach, and Miles is more balanced and willing to gamble, to let his quarterback throw. Miles played on the offensive line at Michigan. Remember how Saban almost gave the game up to Texas after the half two years ago? Miles tries to pour it on, even though his players seem to relax too much after a nice lead.

Flynn has shown the NFL that he is a pro.

Miles and Saban have shown they are excellent.

We're lucky to have won one national championship with Flynn. People are quick to forget how poorly he played in the Kentucky game and the first half of the Arkansas game.
Hell of alot better than the whole season ,

The thread is at 4 pages. I just appreciate both those guys. They brought home national titles to Baton Rouge.

This.

Mauck was the worst starter on the 2003 team.

Negative. We played one team with a pulse in those first seven games - VT - and got hammered. Our schedule was loaded on the back end that season.

That doesn't really matter because of how the SEC was that season.

We probably wouldn't have won the SEC. Georgia was too good.

We easily make the SECCG with Mauck, though. We were one fluky arse 80 yard drive away from going with Randall.

(This thread has slowly morphed into who was the best QB to who played on the best team.)

Not the biggest fan of these type of threads because it kind of forces you to pick sides when both of the players were on the same side.

Some balancing thoughts on the topic:

Mauck:
- The '01 SECCG was one of the finest moments in LSU history and largely thanks to MM.
- Although we lost at VT to start '02 it wasn't MM's fault. We dropped a lot of passes that game.
- I don't know if we would have run the table after MM got hurt at UF, but we were on a roll.
- Had Mauck returned in '04 I think we would've beaten AU. UGA the next week would have been a much different game. Dunno if we would've won 'cause UGA was making some plays.
- Some low moments: a) being shutout on O vs UF in '03, b) didn't play well in big games (OM and OU)

As for Flynn, although we lost two games in '07 it's hard to place too much blame on him. Zinger dropped a TD pass against UK and we had a TD pass (to Hester) called back vs Arky (when Early lined-up wrong).

One advantage Flynn had over Mauck was a much quicker release.

I vote for Flynn.
