In these kinds of posts, I'm always surprised Mauck doesn't get more love. Obviously, he's not the best LSU QB of all time. And I know he didn't have a super long body of work. But doesn't he deserve a seat at the head table?

I was referring to the responses in which multiple QBs are cast out as being top tier. I don't understand how Mauck isn't in that group.
Wasn't a huge LSU follower in the early 2000s, so I'm asking out of curiosity, not a firmly held belief that I'm right.

Fair enough. I'm covering him in glory because of the Natty.

Mauck is underrated. Was an accurate passer and very good runner, but played in Saban's conservative offense. Also people forget he skipped his senior year. He was MUCH better as a sophmore and junior than Flynn as a sophmore and junior. If Mauck had stayed another season, i think he'd be considered top 5. Especially since the 2004 team was loaded everywhere except QB, and still went 9-3, with only one decisive loss to UGA.

"Mauck is better then Flynn period."
I disagree. Perhaps comparable QB's but Mauck played with a much better defense and didn't really produce much in the biggest games (Ole Miss win, NCG win). Both had excellent running games but Flynn and the offense rolled up big points in wins over higher end opponents, including in the NCG (38 over Ohio State). Plus, Flynn had a stronger arm and did not get anywhere near the developmental time that Mauck got playing in 2002 before his injury. I don't think Flynn had a single start until 2007. Close call but I favor Flynn.

But you're comparing Flynn as a senior to Mauck as a junior. Thats why i made that distinction. If Mauck had another season it wouldnt even be a debate.
Also Mauck was a running threat, and Flynn was a statue. I guess its close, but i'd take Mauck if i could choose either one.

He shite the bed in multiple big games. If not for our running game and suffocating defense, people would sing a different tune on him. I'd definitely put Flynn ahead of Mauck.

He must have found great success in business, there's a Title Insurance in every town in the US.
Funny enough, Tittle actually did go into the insurance business after he retired. I don't know that he wrote Title insurance, though.

Hard to compare. Bert Jones was never even the full time starter at LSU. Plus the 1970s were a very different era of CFB.
Just can't compare Jones to Russell or Mett. Very difficult.
Bert Jones was a stud, plain and simple. As a passer he was probably ahead of his time and played for the wrong coach - McClendon - to showcase his skill. If you don't think so just look at what he did in the NFL. If he had not had shoulder and neck problems his bust very well could be right next to Y.A. Tittle's in Canton.
Others also think Jones was exceptional. From his Wiki Page:
quote:
In 1990, Jones participated in the first NFL QB challenge. He finished first in the retiree category and third in the regular competition. (The regular competition taking the top three finishers from the alumni competition and adding them to the regular field of current QBs.) Given his strong performance, Bobby Beathard, then the GM of the Chargers, wanted Jones to come out of retirement, but Bert was 39 at the time and chose not to try a comeback.
The widely respected scout Ernie Accorsi is quoted as saying that if Bert Jones had played under different circumstances, he probably would have been the greatest player ever. John Riggins has been quoted as saying Bert was the toughest competitor he has ever witnessed. On the eve of Super Bowl XLII New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, in discussing his choices for the greatest quarterbacks of all time, described Jones as the best "pure passer" he ever saw.

As in all such threads, you need to define the criteria upon which to rank...
1. Strongest arm? Russell and Jones
2. Most Wins? Don't know off the top of my head
3. Most Passing Records? Same as #2
4. Championships? Rabb, Mauck, Flynn
5. Best NFL Career? Tittle, Jones
You could have a different QB for each one.
The classic example is when Pro QBs are ranked. Marino, who never won a SuperBowl, is listed as the greatest.

i thought it was asking best LSU career, and that's Hodson hands down.
*Hodson is also most wins.
** But Jordan Jefferson would have been if not for the suspension. So there goes that as a measuring stick.

"I guess its close, but i'd take Mauck if i could choose either one."
Reasonable minds can differ.
Also, regarding Mauck being a junior and Flynn a senior, I just happen to think Mauck's significant edge in playing time as a sophormore was of more value than Flynn's just hanging around another year. I can see this being a close call, though.
