Best college football game ever "Without" LSU?
Miami-Nebraska Orange bowl 1984
USC-Texas 2006
BAMA-Auburn with the return of field goal

The 1987 Northeast Louisiana National Championship season had some great games and anyone that is old enough to remember should agree.

Doug Flutie “Hail Mary” game. The greatness of that game gets overlooked by most because of how it ended, which is a shame...it was a game for the ages even before that play

Because it had the hallmark of all great games: neither team choked.
One could say USC did when they failed on the 4th & 1 that set up the game winning Texas drive, but that's not what I consider a choke. It's just a missed play.
The same is true of the missed field goal that set up the Kick Six. If that field goal miss had been from 35 yards, that's a choke. But missing a 56-yarder isn't choking.
The greatest games don't have a team choke: they have one team overcoming a great effort. That's why we love the 2007 Florida game: Tebow didn't choke: Jacob Hester took it away from him.
GEAUX TIGERS!

Aggies upsetting Kansas State in the big 12 championship. Had major national championship implications and was a hell of a comeback.

January, 1971 Gator Bowl. Pat Sullivan led Auburn defeated Ole Miss with Archie Manning 35-28.

1971 Number one Nebraska 35, number two Oklahoma 31
Nebraska ended it's previous season beating LSU with a late fourth quarter touchdown by quarterback Jerry Tagge 17-12 in the 1971 Orange Bowl game.
The Nebraska-Oklahoma game featured Tagge and Johnny Rodgers as headliners and Oklahoma had Jack Mildren running it's wishbone offense. These two teams accounted for 17 out of 22 First team Big Eight selections! This was one hell of a rivalry back in these two teams heyday and this game was truly a classic.

Hard to say for sure but one that comes to mind was the Miami - Boston College Flutie Hail Mary game. The pass gets all of the attention but even without that it was a great game.

Oklahoma-Nebraska 1971.
Best friend was an obnoxious OK fan. It was wonderful.
Texas-Arky in 1969 also. #1 v#2. 15-14

LSU had a Bye week, and I could pull in 99.9 KTDY from Walker, so I tuned in. Had a blast listening to that game.
Two weeks before that, I watched BYU beat A&M in the Kickoff Classic. That was also highly entertaining.
I wish LSU would have played A&M in 1996. It would have been our turn to host, too.

The best college game I ever attended in person not involving LSU was probably the 1973 Sugar Bowl. Ara Parsegian's Notre Dame team played Bear Bryant's Alabama team for the national championship. Notre Dame won in a thriller.

I guess I need to rewatch USC v Texas. Why is it such a classic?
Were you living under a rock at that time?

Others that I haven’t seen mentioned.
1969: Texas 15, Arkansas 14 - #1 beats #2 in the season finale. President Nixon on hand. Defensive slugfest on wet turf. A wishbone team using a big pass play to get a comeback win. It sealed a title.
1997: Nebraska 45, Missouri 38 - I say this mostly because a replay is on TV. It was a great game though. An underdog trading punches with the number 1 team. Capped off by the tying touchdown caught off of an ‘inadvertant’ kick as time expired.
2000: Northwestern 54, Michigan 51 - an offensive explosion that was thrilled with big plays late. Wildcats win helped win a share of the Big Ten title.
