For the reasons I articulated, absolutely, Ben Simmons is incredibly reminiscent of Magic Johnson and impacts his team the same way-was reflected by Philly's win total this season, I prefer that over someone like Russ and Kyrie and he's an effective defender as well. Almost the total package as an NBA player but not quite relative to his ability to shoot.
As a rookie, Simmons already has a better true shooting % and defensive rating than Russ.

Simmons has been pretty good this year... But comparing him to Magic at this point is just stupid.... I mean in 1980... Magic led the Lakers to the TITLE... And in game 6 while Kareem was injured Magic went TO Philly and scored 42 points and like 16 RB'S to WIN the Title.... IF Simmons does something like that ,,, THEN we can talk..........

Can only help LSU that this young man be highly successful in the NBA. I hope he keeps it going for many years.

The shooting is MUCH better these days. It’s really not even close. We are in the best era of shooting in the history of basketball.

Is it? How are you judging this?
I mean three pointers are much more common and averages are better than in the 80s, but most of this arguing seems silly to me.

Yah, because the Lakers already had Kareem, Wilkes, Coop, Nixon etc they were a set playoff team but Magic helped push them over the top; Ben Simmons is playing on a franchise that's been the worst in basketball the last 3 seasons, consists of players who have never played together in the NBA context, and hasn't enjoyed meaningful playoff success in basically 20 years, totally different situations, not alike to where you can say comparing Ben to Magic is stupid, cmon Peej you know that comment was intellectually dishonest

How a young Magic would flourish in todays game, or Ben would do in the '80s is conjecture.
The 3pt line came around 1980 and of course that offense wasn't perfected for a while.
A lot more physical defense allowed will alter game approach and stats.
In other words I agree and take it fwiw Simmons is great, as most of NBA agrees.....and Geaux Tigers!!!

They still nearly won that series because of Magic
LOL they lost the series because of Magic, he dribbled out the clock in game 2, committed a costly turnover at the end of the 4th quarter and clanked 2 clutch free-throws in overtime in Game 4, and committed a couple of costly turnovers at the end of game 7, there's a reason he was labeled "Tragic Johnson" that entire summer

Bet he comes out strong next game
Posted on 5/3/18 at 10:10 pm to YogaPants
and there is the disappearing act like he did for many games at LSU..

1 point on 4 shots in 31 minutes is unacceptable! He should be able to get to the rim and get to the line.

quote:you e seen MJ. Magic while great couldn’t elevate his game to the same level as MJ. I’m a huge Magic fan and all, but Jordan is in a class by himself. Game 6 vs Utah is pure will. Pure will.
I just happen to believe that Magic is the best player I've seen,

-IMO the newer generations are vastly more skilled, likely because that's all they do from the time they're 4 or 5 years old until they're passed by or burnt out.
-On the other hand I believe this generation's ability to handle adversity and their level of "grit" is less than the previous generation. As a high risk instructor in the military, I see hundreds of soldiers, sailors and airmen a year come through the training. What we have noticed is that the young kids today are smoking the PT test; they are faster in all categories, swim, run, pull ups push ups and sit ups than we were 20 years ago. However, when we take them out for a non standard (unknown distance, time and intensity)pt session, regardless of the environment hot, cold, sand, mud, sea or pool, they will QUIT before the 30 or even 40 year olds.
