I thought this was satirizing that he tells this story on nearly every broadcast
ETA to be fair it’s usually brought up by the play by play guy

i think there is a heirAchy of scholarships if you’re on 2 teams which one counts otherwise ever DB and WR would get a track scholarship because who really cares about T&F if you can get a bunch of extra scholarships for a money maker
I know there is a rule for football that every player on scholarship counts toward the football scholarship limit for just that reason. Bear Bryant used to put players on scholarship in other sports like you suggested, so the rules were changed to cut off that loophole. You could be correct that the same rule applies to basketball or it may just be that it allowed McDonald to get a full scholarship without using up a big chunk of the baseball allotment.

Dave Neal and Big Ben will be back calling our Super this weekend.

Most games are not that long, and you don't need to fill space.
Baseball is a very slow game, with little action. That's just the nature of the game.
So TV commentators absolutely have to fill time.

Hopefully we get Dave Neal and Ben McDonald on the call again this weekend. They are great

Kind of crazy they didn’t put him on the broadcast much during the 2023 run. I remember one of Skenes big postseason starts they had him on some other random game

I’m just curious why 53 people made the conscious decision to downvote this post.
Im fully aware there’s prob a lot of fat sausage fingers posters on here but 53 seems excessive.
I heard him say it this past week too on tv.
Didn’t know it either.

Ben needs to get into the cliche thesaurus though, he's about worn out his current repertoire

When you call the game of a team many times in a season and have to fill 3 hours + of time p, virtually impossible to not repeat yourself numerous times from game to game

He's also an avid outdoorsman

Apparently he threw 221 pitches in one of his HS games
Ben was thought of as the next Nolan Ryan , a workhorse pitcher that could throw as much as you needed him to.
Then he became the poster boy for not overthrowing your pitchers. He is a big part of why pitch counts and all that started being a thing.

Not sure if this is still the case but it was “back in the day”. If a player was a two sport athlete with baseball being one of the sports, the scholarship would have to come from the other sport. It was designed to keep schools from utilizing baseball to add players to their other sport’s rosters basically.

He was also the punter/kicker on his HS FB team

His first spring training in the MLB, Ben found and caught an alligator near the hotel and put it in the bathtub so his roommate would find it.

Sorry if this was already posted, didn't find it...
Good bar bet.
Name 2 #1 overall draft picks coached by Dale Brown
Everyone will get Shaq and then offer Roberts, Jackson, Swift, etc.
Few will name Ben McDonald.

Its more because baseball has only had partial scholarships (11.7 total scholarships to be spread through the whole team) . Better players would get a higher percentage than others but full scholarships were very rare. The full scholarship sports would typically have to cover the scholly for dual sport athletes
Of course this is all changing in the near future due to the restructuring with NIL etc

Consider this a reminder to approach information found on the internet, particularly on forums, with a healthy dose of skepticism.

I dated a girl in college who's dad kept a few baby alligators in a little enclosed habitat in his back yard. Weird dude.
