Ben McDonald as Baseball Announcer/Commentator: A+
Ben has his priorities right, his family always comes first. ESPN has tried numerous times to make him a full time announcer but he does not like the travel time involved, as it would take him away from his family. Good guy all around, great LSU guy too.
Fwiw - I umped a game he pitched with at Denham. In my 20+ years of upping, he was the hardest thrower. The lefty from Gonzales, Patterson I think, could bring it as well. Seems like he was in the low to mid 90's. Ben was over 95. That breaking ball was very good as well.

yea, he's fun to listen to and that's the first time I've said that in years. he come's from a pitcher's prospective, which is understandable, and has me guessing pitchers based on his info. the man is good. he tries to add stuff on the batters prospective but it just doesn't fly. guess he never batted.

He's outstanding. I also lime Chris Burke as well.

Big ben, booger, marcus spears, and ryan clark all do a really good job on air

I think Todd Walker does a good job as well.

I'm glad ESPN has given him the opportunity. As much as we rag on them it's great that they are putting the resources into college baseball. I'd say Ben is up there, just behind Kyle Peterson in terms of commentators.

I enjoy his pitching analysis.

Homespun self-deprecating humour always goes far, and Ben does it very well.

Hot as hot sauce on a sunburn.

He adds a lot to the telecast with his knowledge and experience- just needs to slow down his speech and enunciate.

All the great pitchers know exactly what the batters are thinking.

He was all business. How do you make an impartial call when your nephew is pitching? I think he did a good job. He has the best knowledge. I learn so much about pitching listening to him.
He is the best!

Outstanding with the pitcher/catcher interaction that you wouldn't know about otherwise. He actually is good with the mindset of the batter as well. An instance last night was talking about the curveball down and away on a batter. It was the pitch Lange wanted to use but McDonald explained how he should throw a fastball high during that sequence to get the batter thinking about that and then come back to the curve away. The batter would then swing. However if he just kept throwing the curve away the batter would lay off of it. Crazy how the mind works.

Ben and Kyle Peterson are excellent. CBB has done a good job with their top two PBP men.

Heard him talking about it during one of the broadcasts earlier this year. Not sure what his average in high school was but apparently did bat and he enjoyed that part of the game. Said he asked Skip about the possibility of it and Skip didn't say a word. Just turned around and walked out.
