sounds like after the last series of layoffs, said newspaper is letting everyone escape .. that thing is going to crap, imo .. used to be one of THE best sports sections in the SEC region at one time ..

I will take issue with the base running comment. The closer you get to being in the World Series and then playing quality teams in the World Series, the more poor base running is going to hurt you. I'm not talking about aggressive base running. I'm talking about poor base running filled with mistakes caused by a very poor third base coach over and over again. Aggressive base running yes, poor non fundamental base running no.

Nicholls State used eight pitchers to defeat LSU 3-1.

That taxed a friend of mine, who shall remain anonymous for the purposes of this discussion. He wrote me to say, "A team that loses to Nicholls is not going to Omaha."

The Tigers further fanned the flames by losing two of their next three games at home against Tennessee, which was the last-place team in the SEC with a 2-13 record entering the weekend. Several role players had started for LSU in the Nicholls game, and the lingering question was why Mainieri wasn't serious about having a consistent lineup.

That was a sorry stretch of LSU baseball. Also whereas we had been winning a bunch of SEC series', we were going 2-1 and winning some games in tight fashion vs some mediocre opposition, too.

I'm happy as pigs in slop we're headed to Omaha again. But at the time it was certainly wrong to dismiss a trip to Omaha,it would have been as equally incorrect to shrug and say 'that's baseball' this is a championship club.

what poor baserunning decisions are you talking about? Him sending a guy to the plate who is out b/c of a great throw isn't a "poor decision"

Well, I hate to be redundant, but I feel obligated to also include my applause on a well written and thought out piece.

Nice job, Carl. I enjoy reading your stuff. You are sorely missed at the newspaper-whose-name-we-shall-not-speak. ;)

Carl,

You need to take ole Glenn Guilbleaux's job from him. I was listening to him this morning on a local sports radio show here in Alabama. He sounds about as much of an idiot as his articles. It's not fair that he has a job with a newspaper and you don't. We LSU fans need to demand you take his place.

Carl: Great article. Good to here from someone that has an idea of what’s going on in sports. I get tired of reading the comments from the snot nose little darlings on the rant. These kids most probably never caught a baseball, much less tried to hit one coming to the plate at 85-90 mph. Neither have they dropped back in a pocket to throw a football and have a 300#+ lineman looking to take their head off. They never played the game, yet they have the audacity to criticize some young athlete like Austin Nola or Jarrett Lee who’s out there playing the game they love to the best of their ability. These are great young freshman that don’t deserve the garbage that comes across on the rant. I, for one, would like to see one of these little mama’s boys try to take their place.
Best they just get in their mommy’s BMW’s and just go to class like good little boys cause they don’t know squat about football or baseball.
Said and done!!! LSU FAMILY
