I followed LSU basketball closely from 1984 to 1991, when I went off to college. It was amazing. The Final 4 run in 1986. LSU vs. Indiana in 87 and Bobby Knight banging on the scorer's table. We should have won that game and gone back to the Final 4. Chris Jackson in 1988 and the game against Georgetown. Ricky Blanton. Shaq. Stanley Roberts. Vernel Singleton. Mo Williamson. UNLV. Loyola-Marymount. Those games and players will live in my mind forever.

I was a basketball nut at the time and played for hours everyday. The greatness of LSU basketball had a lot to do with a kid like me loving the game so much. Then, Shaq left and Daddy Dale never regained his touch. Sanctions and the John Brady era. I couldn't stand Brady. Sorry to say it, but even with the Final 4 run, he seemed to be the antithesis of what LSU basketball was supposed to be about.

I'm really excited about Trent Johnson and like the guy alot. He reminds me of Tony Dungy a great deal - a quiet warrior. I think that LSU basketball will return to greatness.

Starting Five in 1981:

C--Greg "The Cookieman"--Coooooooooooook
F--Leonard--"Swat"--Mitchellllllllllll
F--Durand--"Rudyyyyyyyyyyy"--Macklin
G--Howard--"Hi-C(eeeeeeeeeeee)"--Carter
G--Ethan "Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee"--Martin
and the Best sixth man in College Basketball...

Willie--"Superman"--Simmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmms

What's bad, is this is the best starting five LSU ever had, and that was the year AFTER LSU lost Al Green and DeWayne Scales (oh, and 7'-0" Rick Mattick--LOL---->who remembers that guy? ).

TexTgrTed: I was one of those crazy guys who camped out on the ramp at the PMAC for the Kentucky game.

I never camped, but remember planning classes to skip in order to get a good spot in line on game day.

Damn Kyle Macy broke our hearts at the end of the game when he buried the game winner!

That was a killer, as I recall the game went back & forth before Macy ended it.

Scales was a freak on the court! The Astronaut could slam like the best of 'em today.

I still believe he's the best I've ever seen play the forward position at LSU. Damn shame he got mixed up with the agent after the 1980 season, 'cause we could have used him during the Final Four run in '81.

You still can't beat Sat. night in Tiger Stadium, but we used to rock the house at the bball games.

Yeah, we're old enough to remember when the home team lost more than a couple of games each season in Death Valley.

The PMAC can rock - if we can play consistently better, and get some quality athletes, it will again.

Truer words have never been spoken. Until recently, I blamed my hearing loss on Saturday nights in the fall, but now I'm not so sure that Dale's Deaf Dome didn't have something to do with it.

I like Trent Johnson and he'll get it turned around. Geaux Tigers!! You guys raise hell at the game this weekend!! It'll be nostalgic. Wish I could be there!!

I agree, I believe LSU BB is on the right course with TJ, AD just needs to BE PATIENT and give him time to establish himself. After all, they gave Brady all the rope he needed.

Go early, yell loud, and watch how the Tigers respond. Tomball and I did our part back in the day, now all of you do us proud!

I still get chills remembering that PA call of the starting lineup...that is, what I could hear above the noise.
Whenever Willie would get up off the bench to come in, the place would buzz with excitement. As I recall, he was about 6'3" but jumped like a guy about 6'9", and was just lightning on the fast break.

It was certainly the most athletic starting 5 I can recall--all 5 could shoot, rebound, & defend (well, maybe Cookieman, RIP, had his offensive challenges), so double-teams didn't work against this group.

And to think, Ethan Martin was a WALK-ON that earned a scholarship with brilliant PG play--great defender, top assist man, and could score a little if needed.

I remember walking behind Mattick & his girl going to a FB game in '79--bunch of us were asking each other "is that him", and the chick turned around and said "yeah, that's him". Dude was huge (nearly 300 lb.) and was a farily solid player but I think his knees got messed up.

Mattick did have knee problems and never reached his potential. He was similar to
Dewayne Schintzius who played at Florida a decade later. In a strange twist Mattick left the team between the SEC tournament and teh start of the NCAA tournament in 1979.

BASKETBALL WAS AS EXCITING AS FOOTBALL

I was there and it was an exciting time for hoops, but don't kid yourself...if football was winning it still was never close.

The 70's and 80's were a different era. No cable or internet and lots less to do. Even when LSU was bad in Dale's first 5-6 years, and they were bad, LSU would get good crowds at home against the better teams.

I remember in 1990 Shaq's sophomore year we got a big road win against Bama and I was pretty excited and I turned on local sports radio to hear talk of the game.

Well, there was one call about the game on Tiger Rag Radio that day and the rest were about Curley's first recruiting class.

Perspective.
