As far as NBA talent was concerned, Zona in the Shaq years, Loyola Marymount, and a few others (Illinois? in the tourney) in addition to the Georgetown and UNLV game....wow, just sick the amount of talent on the court at one time.

I remember the Basketball "hey-days" during the 80s. Whether football was good or not didn't matter. It was great.
A lot of people don't realize that LSU BB is the second winningest program in the SEC. That dosen't happen by making a tournament once in awhile. It takes sustained, good play for years.

Thanks for the memories, Dale

Jerry Reynolds was The Ice Man. Scales was The Astronaut.

Yeah, LSU BB was every bit the thrill of any football game in 80 and 81. Got to see it up close and personal as a Tiger Basketball Band Drummer......

Basketball was never and ,with my tastes, never will be as exciting as football. We had some good teams, good support, but when the Tigers are winning in football, there is nothing like it.

I would have to agree. At one point during the game i started thinking to myself about how nervous I was and how similar it was to football

TexTgrTed: I was one of those crazy guys who camped out on the ramp at the PMAC for the Kentucky game. Damn Kyle Macy broke our hearts at the end of the game when he buried the game winner! Scales was a freak on the court! The Astronaut could slam like the best of 'em today. You still can't beat Sat. night in Tiger Stadium, but we used to rock the house at the bball games. The night of the 1980 Olympic hockey game for the gold against Finland, was electric. All during the timeouts at the bball game, the announcer gave the hockey score. The place went nuts when we won. The bball team used that atmosphere to demolish the other team. The PMAC can rock - if we can play consistently better, and get some quality athletes, it will again. I like Trent Johnson and he'll get it turned around. Geaux Tigers!! You guys raise hell at the game this weekend!! It'll be nostalgic. Wish I could be there!!

Those games in the Dome where huge, I was in high school but we made every one. The Chris Jackson years were special. Wimp Sanderson, Shaq, the white kids at Vandy, the SEC was a wild conference back then. I remember LSU big men going against Robert Horry for Bama. Good times.

Tiger Tykes..old tip drill and flush..Ole Red hollers..Front Row Lunatics..repelling rafter Mike..etc..Macy, Bowie, Jeff Malone, Barkley, Person, Wilkins, etc in town..

Raucous!

Panzer...I was there when LSU beat Loyola Marymount. I was there for to watch Ricky Blanton bury a three pointer from the corner to beat UNLV. Although I never did it myself, I remember students camping out to get in. Yes, when the Deaf Dome truly is a deaf dome, it is pretty neat.

That being said, basketball at its finest will never be as exciting as football at its worst, in my opinion. It's kinda like the old saying that a bad day fishing is better than a good day at work...or that sex is good, even when it's bad.

Don't get me wrong...I've seen and enjoyed the hell out of some great moments in the PMAC. Maybe I'm just an LSU "football school" purist, but hell will freeze over before basketball becomes as exciting as football.

There's a reason that the stadium across the street from the PMAC holds nine times as many fans as the PMAC can.

LSU basketball is special as hell. This team is already special, no matter how they end up, because it's just amazing to see a group of young men believe in each other and their coach

unreal how virtually the same team (minus an NBA talent + a great college player) can go from the cellar to tops in the SEC...really makes me proud to be an LSU fan

Basketball rode a wave of popularity in the late 70s and early 80s nationally. It was a lot of fun to be a part of that. The SEC, before that, was all KY w/ some parts of Tenn and Ms St in basketball and it was a real pleasure to be at LSU when Dale's teams got better every year.

At the time I was way more into basketball than football.

The tournament was expanded and then ESPN came in and made that a real event.

during this time basketball was indeed as much fun as football. for me, that's reversed itself now and i think that basketball has peaked and college football has not. maybe it's just me, but there is no longer any comparison to the "event" of a college football season.

National signing day.

Seriously...you're entitled to your opinion and I'm entitled to mine.

I'll take the spring game over the Final Four.

Don't get me wrong, I would rather have a national championship in football than any other sport. BUT, Basketball was awesome. It is relative.

Yes football was down, but guys, I really wish you could have been there. It was unhinged.

Mike the tiger used to rappel out of the ceiling! It was freaking crazy and it was Dale that made it that way.

Anyway, it was great and I am so very glad to have lived it.

Before 2000, The period from 1984 to 1988 was THE MOST SUCCESSFUL 5 YEAR PERIOD IN LSU FOOTBALL HISTORY in terms of wins, coinciding exactly with my years at LSU, and I am here to tell you LSU basketball generated as much heat nationally as the football team.

LSU football was the big social event, but the on-the -field-product did not garner the attention that Daddy Dale did. You couldn't turn on the tv without LSU playing somebody in a big game.

LSU football did not (possible exception 87) get that kind of respect and nowhere near the publicity.

I'm a football guy for sure, but those were some great times. It seems like college and NBA basketball as a whole was just bigger then.

No doubt...basketball was great back then...I was there too. It just wasn't AS exciting to me as football.

My dad is a KU grad and he hasn't been to a KU football game in years. He now travels to LSU football games and KU basketball games. You're correct...There is a difference in person but also in school mentality. Bought him tickets to the Orange Bowl vs. Virginia Tech and didn't go (KU had no one there but the band)
