Im you say that but we had a lot of base runners advance on passed balls, I even remember few people reaching first on a dropped strike 3.

For anyone interested, the latest Hey Fighting Podcast interview is with Paul Skenes and Thatcher Hurd.

I just looked and that pod isn’t posted/showing up. The last one was Friday with the Texas Tech radio guy?

Kling is legit... could see him out there after spring break... Neal and Jones are both legit... big bats too. unpopular opinion.. guidry takes over for thompson at some point..

Forgot which hitter was being interviewed but he had mentioned Collins as someone who has been tough to hit. That’s Johnson’s guy though. Will be one of the first RHP he turns to out of the pen.

Kling will be one of the corner outfielders game one.

I don’t see this but I am higher in Thompson than most. I think he is a solid shortstop and a really good hitter and was the most clutch hitter on the team end of last year.

I'm pretty sure he did single out Collins saying he made great strides in the offseason and will be a contributor on the mound. I believe that was mentioned when someone asked a question about the closer role. SO I took it as Collins may be a closer option.
Yeah he singled out Collins saying he improved some. He always had good stuff just walked too many guys last season (20 in 32.1 IP). Players only hit like .200 against him.
I dont know hes involved in the closer role really but he can pitch extended innings like when a starter gets run early and such. He's a guy you can put out there and trust for 2-3 innings if he has control of his stuff.
Feel like closer will be between Taylor and Shores mostly. They are throwing 98mph heat and very difficult to hit. Shores they might want to start on mid-week games though.

Collins was coming off of an injury last year. I think he was running it up there before the injury, so I wouldn't be surprised to see a jump. His breaking ball is filthy. And he was working a couple more pitches last season, slider/cutter and changeup.

I think in a different situation, Collins would be a candidate to get starts.

I just went rewatch. Collins was mentioned when asked about the closer. Not necessarily saying he will be the closer. Johnson used the term massive 2 times in a row when saying the jump he made in improvement from last season. Don't think Collins will be the closer or that type but it sounds like Johnson was saying he may be in the conversation.
Around the 46 minute mark on the youtube video on LSU Sports channel if you want to go back and listen to his answer on the closer role. Basically saying TBD but it will be one of the best arms on the team not named Skenes.

First time I've heard Hurd. Cerebral kid to go along with all of that talent. Also sounds like he believes he's 100% healthy.

i like all the guys, but Thompson I've never liked as a hitter.. and his glove needs all the improvement it can get.. theres a reason Johnson tried getting 2 middle portal guys and lost out to the draft... thompsons swing is too inside out.. kid has a great arm though...hope he puts it all together.

do you hate his plate production as well? .286 with a .827 OPS, a 16% K rate and almost as many walks as strikeouts will certainly work for me and was much improved at the plate from year 1 to 2 under Jay.

2 of the three infield positions were wide open after last season had a lot to do with this as well. Not necessarily to take Thompson’s job but to compete with him for the job defensively and the lesser of them would probably be the second or third baseman.
Thompson was always going to be in the lineup for the 2023 season it just may not have necessarily been at short had those guys came.

I don't know about that. You would have had White, Pineda, and Young. Maybe Thompson would have found a home in the OF, or they would have moved White to 1B and Tre to the OF. I just don't think Thompson's chances were looking good.

I think it really would have come down to Carter’s ability to bounce back. He was god awful last year at the plate. Him getting what he got in the draft was such a win for him after that season.

Pineda definitely would have started here but I would put Thompson over Young unless he massively improved from his last season. Keep in mind he barely was able to hit over .200 last year.

Young was injured last season. Thompson has never sniffed the kind of numbers Young put up when healthy. It's definitely possible that he never got back to old form, but Young's ceiling is higher. He was a top 25 prospect out of high school, top SS in the nation. Played on the junior national teams, etc.
