How will the staff get down to the 40 man limit from the 44 we are at now?

It has a way of working itself out
Players have a pretty good idea where they stand after fall practices and scrimmages
Some players have injury issues that impact the roster as well
I wish the NCAA would expand the roster permanently
Maybe you could even have almost like a practice roster of 5 extra in case you have injuries especially to pitchers or just the need to have bullpen catchers

The limit isn't 40, it's 35+5 COVID year guys. We currently only have 4 guys that qualify for the COVID year so our limit is 35 plus those 4.

There will probably be guys that leave at the semester break. There will be guys that agree to redshirt. There will be injuries.

I actually think it will work itself out pretty nicely.

The more talent the bring in, the easier it becomes. Players realize they won’t play.

I think it will work out in a way that some people will be disappointed in what players we lose, which is ultimately better than before when guys fell off the roster and couldn't play at their next stop (if they even had a next stop).

I'm only making this comparison because it's the roster/program I'm most familiar with outside of LSU: since Vitello got to Tennessee they've had guys transfer out of the program and become conference player of the year or the first guy in a draft class to reach the majors. And it hasn't slowed them down. It means they were bringing in the right talent if guys like that either didn't fit or couldn't get on the field.

We had guys going D2 and never pitching, going to JUCO and never playing, going to small conference schools and being bad or never getting on the field. If we have guys that aren't good enough to play here go somewhere else and light it up, that speaks very highly of the guys we kept around.

This statement makes sense only if all our guys play lights out. If a player lights it up elsewhere after leaving LSU, it could mean we don’t evaluate talent well and decided poorly or that we don’t develop/coach talent well. Let’s hope that isn’t the case.

Here's my take on the roster. Based on performance or being a new recruit (and Johnson has not shown a willingness to cut recruits without a season), you're left with:
- 4 COVID seniors who do not count
- 33 roster "locks", who will stay unless they transfer
- 3 questions marks
- 3 on the outside looking in

COVID Seniors
Beloso
Bollman
Dugas
Merrifield

Locked Infielders (assuming they do not transfer)
Guidry
Thompson
Nippolt
Morgan
White

Locked Outfielders (assuming they do not transfer)
Crews
Jobert
Pearson
Stevenson
Kling
Ruddell
Paul

Locked Catchers (assuming they do not transfer)
Milazzo
Neal
Frey
Jones
Travinski

Locked “Starting” Pitchers
Floyd
Little
Hurd
Skenes
Taylor

Locked “Relief” Pitchers
Money
Cooper
Collins
Ackenhausen
Bronzini
Bucknam
Shores
Herring
Moffett
Primeaux
Appleby

Questions Marks (will make the team if questions clear up)
Noot – will definitely be on the team if he wants to, but has not fully “bought in”. Hence, he has not pitched in the fall to-date. Seems like that could change soon, and he would move to a lock.
Lansville – somewhat hurt last year. Assuming it does not linger, and he redshirts, he will have a spot.
Fontenot – rumored internal discipline issues, but #1 in-state pitching recruit last year. If it clears itself up, he should be on the roster.

Redshirt
Coleman – unless something unexpected occurs, he will be out for the year and redshirts, not counting against the 35 +5 limit.

Outside Looking In
Hellmers
Edwards
Dutton

My personal opinion is you lose one of the question marks (my guess is Fontenot since Lansville is already back pitching in the fall). I think one of the 5 catchers decides to try his luck elsewhere, and Hellmers, Dutton, and Edwards are fighting for 1 spot. Johnson seems to know this as he has pitched those 3 the most in the fall. So far, Hellmers seems to be leading that battle. If you lose another pitcher, you slide in the next on the list. Only place where we are still thin is infield. If we lose someone there, we could look for a last-minute transfer.

I don't disagree. I'm pre-supposing that the guys we keep outperform the guys that leave. The two players I cited from Tennessee had a lot of success (one was CUSA player of the year and one was Arizona's friday night starter on their Omaha team) but Tennessee still made it to Omaha without them. You could argue the pitcher would have helped because you never have enough arms, but the position player had been beaten out at multiple infield spots and was taking up a big scholarship allocation (so him leaving had other positives unrelated to his performance).

Fontenot

Naptime said he had TJ and is out for the season. Project questioned if he had full TJ or the other procedure done. Either way he is injured and seems like will be out. So he likely will not count against the roster.

Other than that I think the rest will work itself out. Don't think us as fans have a full picture of what is going on in the program to speculate who will be here and who won't come spring time.

He definitely had surgery over the summer. He threw once or twice for the Cane Cutters and then had surgery. It was UCL repair, but the Seth Manness surgery is supposed to have a shorter recovery time than TJ. Fontenot used his RS year last year, but he could just be off the roster for this season and come back as a RS Soph next year.

There is an allowance for actual medical redshirts to not count against the roster. For non-medical guys can redshirt off the roster though I've seen us and other schools have guys on their roster on their website over the limit that ended up redshirting. Blaise Priester fit that criteria last season.

I used to feel like I had a decent handle on it. Now, not as much.

That's interesting on Hellmers. Obviously, things don't always work out, but his hype coming in makes this surprising. I get it, though, tons of talent and someone ends up on the outside looking in.

What makes you say that about Dutton? Was right in the mix for a Sunday starter last year and was pretty reliable for outings 4 innings or less last year... don't really see him moving backwards

Dutton absolutely should have a spot on the roster based on last year’s performance.
