Laird getting benched
You don't take that speed off the field. He needs to drop in the lineup, but you need him in the OF. Drop him to 8th and when he does get on he'll score with the top moving him around.

Honestly I just think PM is trying to manufacture runs by setting the table for the middle of the lineup. Sciambra has been on base so much and we have been playing such close games that I think he feels like one run could win the game with the way our pitchers have been throwing. Also, might be interested in seeing how Bregman reacts with RISP being a true freshman in the three hole. Lots of pressure.

let's not forget we won the SEC last year with the 7th ranked team in the league hitting
People still don't want to hear it or believe it, but we overachieved last year based on our talent level.
Rhymes and Katz aren't going to have the career years they had last year, but we have more talent around them. A lot of it is young and will be inconsistent at times, but should hopefully round into form when it counts. If Jones can continue to be selective and not hack away at everything in sight like last year it will be a huge boost.

I don't think McMullen had a single ball hit to him tonight and I can count on one hand how many times Rhymes had to move over the weekend. No harm.

This team is leaps and bounds more talented than those of the past 2 seasons.
I agree, but it's still so early there's no telling how improved we are at the plate. So far, we haven't shown much at the plate other than when a terrible pitcher gets up there we can get walked a bunch and move over/in on wild pitches. That's been most of our offensive "explosion" thus far in the last 2 games.
Right now we're hitting .297 with 6 XBH in 4 games...not exactly earth shattering numbers against the competition faced thus far. We've scored the runs the last 2 games, but once again not because we were lighting up pitchers from the plate so much as waiting for a bad pitcher to do the hard work for us.
I hope as it warms up, and players get in grooves, we certainly show the talented advantage we have this year vs. previous years.

Yeah but don't forget about the plays that Laird made in RF this weekend. Sometimes having the best possible defense in the outfield is big. If McMullen can hit he could very possibly slip in the lineup while Rhymes DHs. I would expect a lot of late game defensive substitutions for Rhymes if he is in LF

The starting pitching continues to DOMINATE for LSU as starting pitching has now allowed a total of 1 earned run in 22 innings this season to go along with 23 strikeouts and only 5 walks
Wow! stealing this. Great write up!

I thought it was interesting that McMullen got the nod in right today and Sciambra in left. I always thought that if Laird ever made the move to CF, Sciambra would be in right.
I really liked what I saw from Laird in center today, he covered the alleys really well and I think if he plays there more it will diminish Rhymes' role in left.

I agree. I am assuming that out of Sciambra, Laird, and McMullen that McMullen has the best arm hence the reason for him being in RF.

He's doing it because for whatever reason he thinks it'll help his draft position which obviously it won't because he's not a good outfielder. It's not like he's going to get drafted based on his mediocre to bad outfield ability. His draft stock doesnt improve by showing how he cant play outfield on the pro level, never understood moves like this.

I dont expect he'll be shagging 10 balls a game nor having to make tough catches every game, but there will come times where, if we had a more athletic/stronger arm'd better outfielder out there can help save runs in close games. That's what I'm worried about. I think Mainieri should set this team up where it's best at, not for what he thinks will help an individual in the draft some.

He will. Mainieri has never been afriad to make radical changes late in the season.

Did the sports guy on the news today say McCune has a fracture in back?

Thanks, I kinda heard that from another room and wasn't sure what he said.

If Laird struggles to hit, he could get benched and used as a late inning pinch runner/defensive sub. I really hope he gets it together because I'd love to see that speed in the lineup... but speed doesn't mean a thing if he can't get on base.
What about Stevenson.. any chance he can break into the lineup? He looked solid in limited action this past weekend.

Also, any word on who gets the start against BYU? Will he throw Nola or keep the starters on their normal days?
It is going to be Nola. It just doesn't make any sense to do it any other way. Bonvillain and Glenn are both out of the question as far as Thursday goes. They would have to go with about 6-7 pitchers to get through the game and it makes absolutely no sense to burn through that much of your bullpen in the first game of a three game series.
Nola-Thursday
Eades-Friday
Bonvillain-Saturday
The thing is, hasn't Laird's outs been put outs of other runners? He only has 1 K in 4 games right? Seems like he's putting the bat on the ball, they're just not getting through. He's also laid down several bunts right? Sorry, I'm in North LA and haven't seen any games yet. Sounds like he needs to be put in a position to get on base vs trying to move a runner.

I just don't see Laird coming out of the lineup. He hasn't done the greatest thus far, but it is 4 games. It is tough to take that speed and defensive ability out of the everyday lineup. I still see him moving down in the lineup and maybe sitting in the 8 or 9 hole and acting like a second leadoff man down there to spark things.
