Allow points at the end of the half and/or a scoring opportunity for the opposing team within their first two possessions.

They’ve done this in every SEC road game since he’s been here with the exception of two:

1. 2024 A&M (awful in other ways with 5 consecutive scoring drives in the second half)

2. 2025 Oklahoma

Overall, we are 2-8 in SEC road games since 2024. Certainly, not all of that is on him, but Baker’s defenses are giving up an average of 26.5 points on the road in conference play.

He’s also allowed at least 375 yards of total offense in all of the games with the exception of:

1. Arkansas-2024
2. Florida-2024
2. Alabama-2025

I think the most frustrating thing is that he is a capable coordinator. Just would like to see more consistency against better competition, especially on the road.

These next 4 games will be very telling. Would love nothing more than to be proved wrong.

All the more reason for a Lane Kiffin coached team to be up 10+ and not leave it in the hands of the defense

Baker's biggest deficiency seems to be not leaning into his team's strengths. He has 1 great CB and two more who are decent. And a strong pass rush. Yet he at critical times opts for prevent/soft coverage. I think it is what ultimately cost us both losses.

Kind of hard for any offense when your alleged top-10 defense and highly paid DC is allowing points off the bat and you’re constantly having to play from behind in hostile environments.

That is who will be the next LSU DC, I hope he picked up a few tricks from Montie.

Personally I'm not completely opposed to it for continuity sake

I'm opposed to it. We have to have a DC that's fireable if he fails. Will Lane fire his brother if he needs to, or would he stick with him until they both dig their own grave?

Just makes me uneasy thinking of the head coach's brother as DC.

The key to stopping teams in 2 minute offense is pass rush from front 4 no matter what the secondary does or what scheme coaches call

A combination of zone and man with a spy. Trying to disguise what you are doing would help. We give away cover 3 with 20 seconds left on the play clock so OC’s know exactly what they are getting.

Defense forced a 3 and out on OM first possession of the game.

LSU followed up with our own 3 and out.

Defense then held them to a FG, and LSU went 3 and out again.

That led to OM first TD. We followed up their first score with 28 yards and a punt, they scored another TD.

We then got our first TD to stave off disaster, but three straight punts to open a game on the road is very unlikely to ever lead to a win.

Second half, LSU goes three and out AGAIN. At that point we have one scoring drive out of five. Simply not good enough for a Lane Kiffin coached team imo.

And I’m as big a Kiffin fan as there is. I think that game was always going to be an uphill battle given the emotion, and having it in week 3 is damn near insurmountable.

Still the defense follows up our 3 and out in the second half with an interception, forces a missed FG, and a punt on their next three drives.

Seems to me that’s asking a whole lot of the defense without expecting much support from the offense, which just seems weird to me for those of us that finally got our offensive HC in Kiffin.

This isn’t to bash Kiffin, just saying the constant criticism of our “alleged top-10 defense and highly paid DC” is kind of overlooking our alleged top 10 offense and even higher paid HC and OC, no?

I’ve broken down the Kentucky game many times. Defense held them to 3 points on SIX second half possessions before the tying drive while the offense only got us 10 on those same six opportunities.

Thats just not good enough imo.

Especially when you consider that both OM and Kentucky are OFFENSIVE teams with not great defenses.

Why do we expect the defense to punch up while the offense isn’t getting the points we should expect against not great defenses?

We are a work in progress on both sides of the ball for sure. I’m mostly happy with what I’ve seen from both the offense and the defense given how these games have played out.

So I just don’t see the need to keep tearing down a defense that has gone toe to toe on the road until the last possession with two good offenses.

It’s not like we’re losing games 45-42. The defense is getting plenty of stops to give the offense a chance to close games out.

That’s all I hoped for when we brought in Kiffin and I think it will pay off as we move forward

I mean, it's pretty difficult to not allow these things to happen. For context, only one road team in the SEC accomplished this on Saturday, and that was Arkansas at Vandy (didn't give up points on first two possessions or before half).

MSU @ LSU- TD on first drive
Florida @ Texas- TD on first drive
Auburn @ UGA- TD on first drive
Bama @ Tenn- FG on first drive
Mizzou @ OM- TD on second drive
UK @ OU- FG on first drive

not a 2 deep zone, Play man to man on the corners. Press coverage
Man to man with lbs playing zone in the short field area.
DE not allowsing this qb to get outside. It appears that allbarn QB likes to run at DE' with blockers cutting inside or outside off the block. LSU DE needs to turn the QB back into the inside LB that cannot allow himself to be blocked.
Make this QB pass but under pressure. All college QB's can throw it with receivers running at will and the QB has all day to find which one is open the most.

This is a very reasonable take. I do feel like I find myself not even knowing what a good defense should look like anymore.

I also think part of why we are giving Kiffin a pass here (I am also a big fan of his and think he is going to be great) is because it is his first season and outside of Braelin Moore, Weston Davis and Trey’Dez, it’s an entirely new offense with a new system with a QB coming off an injury that is trying to gel.

Not saying they get a pass either. I thought the play calling was bad first half against Ole Miss and Kiffin definitely should’ve gone for it on 4th.

Baker’s been here three years, so there’s continuity without as much turnover and we’ve kind of started to see some possible trends with him. A lot of the position coaches stayed the same from last year.

The way the game has changed it’s made it a lot harder to defend. Think my biggest gripe with Baker is a lot of the soft zone, playing 7-8 yards off the receiver, and sometimes he doesn’t adjust as quickly as he should IMO.

I also wasn’t in the camp where we had to up his contract to get him to stay when Tulane was in the mix. I don’t think he’s a bad coordinator but not worth an extra $1M or whatever it is he’s making per year IMO.

Really hope he gets this team comes together this weekend and rest of the season because I think this is as wide open of a race to the title as there has been. If we can get everyone to gel, we’re going to be tough to beat.

This ^^^^^

We need to have a 2 score lead with 4 min left in the 4th qtr so as not to even give him a chance to play prevent on the last drive. I would like to think he has learned his lesson and wouldn't make the same mistake three times but I would rather not take the chance and just have a 2 score lead.
