Armchair coaches, how do you handle the baseball team?

Like the rest of the rant, I’m an armchair coach guy.

Reality is expectations were high, we lost leadership and generational talent, and our recruits aren’t what we thought they were (yet).

You’re now the coach, what moves do you make?

1. I personally lean on the guys that I know their max potential. Stick with guys like Hurd, Ack, and Guidry. They’ve proved they can produce on the biggest stage.

2. Milazzo needs to be an everyday guy, give up the bat for the defense he gives you behind the plate. We need his leadership in the lineup everyday. Stop the cute defensive sub at the end of games.

3. At this point, I stick with Kling. He is 100x better than the next player in CF. I think the only guy that can match his play in center is Paul and we haven’t seen him at all.

4. Give Larson a full weekend. The kid has deserved it.

5. At some point I would give Nippolt a look. He started opening day on last years roster. I would think he could put up similar numbers to Braswell. For now, I’m sticking with Braswell.

6. Whatever lineup I land on, I’m trying to give them a full weekend to gel. Jay is tinkering too much at this point and needs to let guys settle in. Bregman started his MLB career 1-36.

7. I’d take the analytics that I’ve got to date and throw them away. Stop relying on match ups and data at this point. Roll with the players who you have confidence in and have executed previously.

It’s all about getting hot at the right time, still plenty of time to heat up. But, the burners need to be on pre-heat right now.

The lineup has been fine with how the roster is constructed.

On the pitching side you need to start getting guys in more consistent roles. Settle in on a 3rd starter. Stop thinking everyone in the bullpen are supermen. The 2nd pitcher into the game doesn’t always have to enter the game with the thought they have to give you multiple innings. Among other issues with bullpen usage & matchups.

You challenge your leaders to step up and lead. Travinski, Milazzo and White have to lead.

Find ANYONE that can hit Lefties and load up your card with those players. That is a win a weekend.

I'd like is to throw more strikes, since we are already getting beat anyway. I'm just so tired of 3 straight breaking balls, which one is in the dirt, to get 3-0 counts. We aren't challenging hitters. Let's just throw strikes and see if the defense can back you up.

Next, I say just stick to a lineup.

Let's define some roles for our pitchers and stick to it. Hurd can ride pine as far as I'm concerned and maybe Ack can only give you an inning or two and it's time to move on.

The hitting is what it is. This is the opposite of what CJJ is trying to do, but I say let the guys swing away early in counts. They are not good at working counts anyway and I feel they are better if they are more aggressive. One added benefit to swinging early and often is the games would be over quicker so we can all move along with our days.

Lastly, when you put in the guy coming off Tommy John for his first action of the year, have somebody else warmed up in case it doesn't go well.

Personally I would play guys who are actually producing, regardless of potential. Every high potential guy has had plenty of chances this year. Hurd wants to keep giving up multiple runs every appearance? Sorry you got passed up by Hellmers. Neal keeps dropping balls and letting pitches go between his legs? Milazzo is starting. Braswell can’t field a clean ground ball to save his life? Put him at DH if you want and let him work on it in practice.

Personally I would do a deep dive and figure out what could be done to get off the field when we have 2 outs, which could be as simple as figuring out how to stop putting the ball on a motherfrickin tee every 0-2 count. It would also behoove us to figure out how to stop walking the opposing teams batters.

Then I would completely flush away everything from last year. Doesn’t matter what performance you made in the CWS last year or how big a role you played. Everyone not named Tommy White is on an equal playing field. Two of the guys we were depending on out of the pen have literally come in the last two series and can’t figure out how to keep the ball in the ballpark. Everyone starts with a clean slate and the guys that perform get the work.

Lastly I would quit with certain experiments and stop trying to fit a round peg in a square hole. Pick a freaking lineup and let guys work through their struggles without having to look over their shoulder. Let them get use to playing every day. Let the guys who came here with the highest ceiling have a chance bc you aren’t just playing for this season. I get seniority but that isn’t working for us right now. Put the best talent on the field and let’s ride.

Hold-man, Jump Jump, Hurd

You can't go all in on two games. I don't like Johnny on Sunday's. Press through 4-6 innings and give up 4-5 runs or less and call it good.

Bullpen is there. They need to do their jobs.

The lineup has been pretty consistent all year. There has been, really, 1 OF spot that has been in an unknown shuffle & they may have found their guy in Larson

Everyone playing has been playing in a pretty consistent pattern

My guy, the lineup is literally different every single game. I get the whole matchup idea, but it isn’t working. Forget about matchups right now and let the guys get into a rhythm.

On any given game day there is no one on this planet that knows what our lineup card is going to look like.

DH, catcher, 2nd base, and literally all 3 outfield positions are on a game to game basis halfway through the season.

I will say I’m not giving up on this season. I still think we can make a regional and be one of those teams that no one wants to play.

The only way in my opinion we are fricked is if CJJ is having an OJ in his backyard at 3 am and gets to the point where he has tried everything and thinks to himself…” I should head over to TD and see if the rant has any ideas”

Root them on. Watch the game till it’s out of hand. Change the channel.

Be patient with it and recognize we won’t win the title every single year.

We must be watching different teams

Catcher has been in a modeled pattern since day 1. This was talked about all offseason, too.

Travinski DH’s (66% of all games) when he doesn’t catch

Milam has been your starting 2B for weeks?

Bingham has started 94% of all games

Kling 70%
Pearson 76%

None of this is really abnormal. You have to play matchups sometimes if you wish to get the most out of your roster

Little too late for this, take your losses. Clean house of all the dead meat, including your pitching coach. Re-load next season IF you can work the transfer portal.

Develop players.

I get Jays addiction to analytics, but stop worrying about matchups that we arent winning and develop players.

Bregman starts every year like that. It’s frustrating to watch but he’s proven year after year that he can get into the groove after all star break. Our guys don't have enough games to do that. Someone has got to bust out soon!

Changes I would make:
Move SM for 2b to SS and start Pearson at 2b
I would have Mallazo at C me travinsky at DH
OF would be Larson, Kling, bringham
Weekend rotation would be
Fri- Holeman
Sat- Jump
Sunday- Cam Johnson with Cam Sanders coming in relief. Get the freshman experience and allow their talent to show up
