Arik Gilbert Blocking Ability

For those who follow recruiting more closely, how is Arik Gilbert expected to translate in terms of his blocking ability? Thad Moss was a perfect fit for this year’s team because he allowed us to stay in our base formation since he was an excellent pass blocker and receiver. Rookie TEs rarely make an impact in the NFL because of their blocking and was curious if the transition is the same from HS to college. At the very least, I expect Gilbert to make a big impact next year lined up as a WR because he will be a mismatch for any LB or S that covers him.

Arik Gilbert will do it all.
I have not been this excited about a incoming Freshman maybe ever.
He is an automatic start-next-day guy. He's as college ready, if not more ready, than Stingley.

Imagine Thad Moss with break away speed.

Great to hear. Can’t wait to see how Brennan performs with Chase, Marshall, Gilbert and the 3 RBs

Imagine a healthy pettigrew and Gilbert 2 TE set with chase/marshal outside with Palmer as a jet sweep threat and (insert name )rb.
This offense is no pushover.

Part of our recruiting pitch was that he would be used more as a receiver than a traditional TE and that he wouldn’t be asked to block the majority of snaps. I got the impression that he wants to be a WR more than a TE. Hopefully he changes his mind and develops his blocking abilities.

If Myles is like the average of Danny Etling and Joe Burrow, this offense is still going to be stupid good.
Play makers everywhere.
Play makers everywhere.

Everyone blocks in running plays
But we generally go with 5 man protection. So even as a TE he’ll be a reciever.
The advantage is if he blocks inline on run plus we can get OLB to cover him.

Imagine the penalties for 12 men on the field. That's 6 skilled guys (2 TE, 3 WR, 1 RB). Add a QB and 5 OL and that's 12.
But otherwise, point taken. There are options.

This would result in too many men on the field.

Arik was forced to play as a lineman growing up because the leagues he played in had rules against certain sized individuals playing skilled positions. He is quite comfortable laying the lumber.

You think Palmer will be good enough to make the staff choose whether to put Chase or Marshall on the bench?

They probably can’t play every play of the season
But no, those two will be a force next year along with Gilbert

Are we running the wildcat now?

do you not realize that there were plenty of times that Chase, Jefferson, and Marshall were on the field at the same time? Trey Palmer fills in for Jefferson, it's only natural. Chase and Marshall stay at their positions, while Kirklin shares time with Palmer in the slot, McMath backs up Marshall on the outside, and Kayshon Boutte backs up Ja'Marr.

Bold prediction for next season:
Arik Gilbert takes over Jefferson’s slot receiver spot the majority of time.
McMath takes over for Moss.
These two can interchange positions but Gilbert better hips than McMath (if you can believe it) which is most suitable for the routes Jefferson ran.
And McMath is a proven blocker.
Like I said, they can interchange but the best slot receiver option behind Gilbert will be Palmer and Koy Moore.

I think by year two he will be a fine enough blocker for what LSU will need. You and everyone else already touched on it but he is a dag one starter solely due to size and speed. He won’t need to know every route concept. Sometimes you just gotta let the beast out and tell him to hit the seam. Good luck guarding him.

dammit. Correct. Won’t edit.
