It may seem like that in Louisiana, but it's not really the case in other parts of the country. Outside of the SEC, I would guess most people don't feel anything about LSU.
If you really want teams hated nationwide, in no particular order: Michigan, Notre Dame, Texas, and maybe Miami.

By fans, no. Too many schools to spread the hate around. By the sports media, Absolutely. It started with the hiring of Coach Mulkey and Brian Kelly. We pissed off the media by taking CKM from a program that was always in the hunt for a title. As soon as she left Baylor the negative press started flowing. With Kelly, how dare you hire a coach away from Notre Dame. Never mind it setting our football team back 5 years. Now with the hiring of Kiffin and Wade we have sports media people having to increase their blood pressure medicine. So we must be doing something right.

That said, the media in particular really has a bone to pick with LSU particularly regarding the Kelly+Kiffin thing and Wade. Oddly enough, LSU is the only program in their eyes that can’t go out and hire a better coach from another program. It’s fine for everyone else to do so, however.

Given that we didn’t make a playoff in any of the meaningful sports…I doubt anyone really cares

Well that’s not true. At the very least Kiffin is very well registering with outside media. And since he’s LSU’s Coach LSU is in outside media. A lot.
