At 16-1, the LSU baseball team is understandably ranked No. 1 in the country. But the Tigers have yet to face a single team currently ranked in the top 30, and their performance against the only Power 5 conference foes was unimpressive.

Against 14 smaller schools, LSU boasted a red-hot .370 team batting average and 13 runs a game, but against Kansas State, Iowa and Texas, that average collapsed to .188 and runs per game to 4.7. Just one of the 34 home runs hit by the Tigers was against the big boys.

Now starting it's SEC schedule, LSU must deal with nine teams ranked ahead of any team it has played thus far, 21 games against teams ranked in the top 30 plus three more against 2021 National Champion Mississippi State.

So how will the Tigers respond to this improved competition? There is talent throughout this lineup, the starting pitching and defense are vastly improved. There is a reason they are ranked No. 1 but let's hope performances against Wildcats, Hawkeyes and Longhorns were aberrations.

It’s baseball and this is the rant, we have a long season of ups and downs ahead with daily overreactions.

I think we’ve got one hell of a team. Still, There’s a good chance we lose two games in a row at some point and as long as that’s during regular season play it’s perfectly acceptable. We’ll probably lose two of three another time or two. That’s fine, if we’re healthy and hitting our stride in 2-1/2 months none of that matters (see last year CWS).

How do you think we’re going to fare?

Great breakdown, I've had the same concerns.

I am dumbfounded by people pointing out our OOC schedule, as if every other SEC team has been playing a conference schedule this far.

The bigger question is how many times will people call for JJs job between now and the end of June.

I don’t know. How will all the other SEC teams respond to their improved competition?

And EVERY team we play will be facing the #1 ranked team. What's your point?

They probably won’t win 16 of the next 17, if that’s what you’re asking

In 2017 we were 13-5 through the first 18 games going into SEC play. We were 0-2 vs ranked teams in that stretch while suffering our other 3 losses to McNeese and UNO x2.

That team made the CWS finals and if we could have gotten it to Lange for game 3 we could have had a good chance to win it all.

Yes we haven't played many strong teams, but our guys are getting in good reps, the bats look really good and the arms look just as good. Tomorrow will show a lot about this team but I am very confident in what CJJ is doing.

Yeah that’s the funny thing. Our fans and media are gripping because of our non conference schedule but look at most of the other SEC team’s schedules. They are not great either. The only thing we could have done is play like a Maryland or Oklahoma for a three game series and the schedule would have been satisfactory. I have never recalled a really great non conference schedule. It seems like we are pretty much playing similar teams we have played in the past.

I trust Jay and this team to take care of business. And again it could be very likely that we lose a series to start SEC play and then run off 8 or 9 straight SEC Series wins. So I would not look too hard at the outcome of this weekend.

They are exceptionally talented and did what they were supposed to do in non conf games. SEC baseball is thunderdome and a lot can happen. Don’t put too much weight into this series wether the tigers go 3-0, 0-3 or something in between

With the exception of Iowa, they won the other two.

So, if you were to tell me we would win every game the rest of the year by playing "okay", then who the frick wouldn't take that 10/10 times?

Of you hope the Texas game was an aberration, you’re expectations are way too high. Did you watch that game? Did you see how filthy their pitcher was? That’s the kind of guys we’re going to be facing on Fridays in the SEC. The fact Hurd dominated too, kept us in the game until we were able to win on a 9th inning home run on a historically great program’s home field, was a great win. There will—hopefully—be a few just like that on a few Friday nights. If you think we’re scoring 7-8 runs and winning comfortably against most Friday night guys, you’re crazy. We’ll probably win some like that, but those will be the aberrations. That Texas game will probably be closer to the norm. If it’s not, and we’re winning those games easily, then we’re even better than we think.

Why do you keep forgetting that all the other SEC teams has played mostly an arse schedule as well? And on top of that, the other SEC teams hasn’t looked near as good against underwhelming competition as LSU has.
