Are Pop Ups a result of Double Play avoidance?

Tigers appear to hit pop ups an inordinate number of times with fewer than two outs with a man on first. Awhile back, our batters were advised to hit the bottom half of the ball. Now it appears that opposing pitchers are throwing high pitches to lure a popup. I would appreciate your thoughts on this.

I think they are mostly a result of hitting under the ball

higher pitches account for more 3 run hrs
lower pitches account for more dps

It’s hard to get on top of a high pitch.

The worst thing about pop ups as a batter is, you were a millimeter from it being a foul into the net.

Pop ups are the result of bat drag

Modern baseball my guy. It’s all about launch angle and this team has a ton of dudes that hit home runs. Power hitters are one to hit more pop ups and fly balls.

With that said, I don’t find that LSU hits an insane amount of pop ups.

Appreciate your thoughtful response. Other users chose to ridcule the question. Some of our best hitters fall into the popup syndrome in double play situations.

What would you advise batters in ths situation?

Well it is really easy when you try to hit the whole ball. Just about every player has a batting average of well over .900, so why not just try to hit half of the baseball to make it interesting

They led the SEC in Fly outs but also in HR & SLG%. You give & you take. But this is Johnson’s strategy, love it or not.

I agree. But maybe an alternate strategy in DP situations.

I have no idea what that strategy sould be.

You're overthinking this. Nobody is changing their approach much with a guy on first vs bases empty or whatever.

Their strategy with a man on first is the same as with nobody on base. They are trying to get a good pitch to drive, hit the ball hard, and in the air if possible. It's the same thing any decent hitter should be doing at the college level in 90+% of at bats

Honestly this isn't really true anymore because of the Bat path being taught. Keeping a pitch low in the zone allows for the upper cut bat patch to work perfectly. High and fast is being swung through at a higher rate now because of that change in path.

low pitches still induce more ground balls than high pitches
