Well CFP rankings ultimately determine what matters at the end of the season. Rankings from AP/Coaches help make early drama in the season. Who would want to go into Week 4 or 5 with "unranked vs. unranked" big market teams?

It really wouldn’t matter because the ESPNs of the world would have “projected rankings” after the 1st week leading up to the real thing. Similar to the AP and coaches polls leading up to the CFP rankings.

Seems like for the 2003 naty we stated off ranked 13th if I remember correctly, but I could be wrong.

The only reason for Preseason rankings is to hype up televised games and pull in casual fans to games they wouldn't normally watch.
People love a top 25 matchup and seeing ranked teams being upset.

You're 100% right that the logical thing would be to just start ranking teams after we've seen them play week 1.
But this is a business and they make money off of people like Ole Miss who buy a bunch of merch / tickets etc. for their #6 team before they go 8-4.
There's notre dame finds right now buying tickets and booking hotel rooms for the national championship that they'll never get to use
