You need to throw TV in there. Since all the SEC games have been on TV it’s hard to deny how good we are as a conference.
It really comes down to journalists have always been lazy and their bias has always been there. Before all games were on TV they could only catch maybe 2 games a week. They watched games from the conferences where they went to school so those schools were over represented/ranked higher in the polls.

AP is an irrelevant pole....it's analogous to the Monarchy in England, no real power, just for show. No reason to consider it or give it any credence whatsoever.
The only ranking that matters are the Playoff Selection Committee's final ranking. That's it.

Are you really comparing the BCS era (where only the Top 2 teams mattered) vs. the current Playoff era?
Win and you're in. Anything else is just the 69th highest rated basketball team that doesn't make the NCAAs. If you're that far down, you're irrelevant to begin with.

Agreed, the BCS poll which will come out in a couple of weeks I believe, makes any other poll irrelevant. It's akin to just doing an internet poll and having folks vote on who's ranked where, it has the same actual relevance.
