Anyone surprised LSU offense played better than LSU’s defense and special teams?

Between the fumbled punt returns taking away possessions from the LSU offense, and numerous 3rd down conversions and missed sacks taking away possessions, LSU offense still managed 23 points but could have scored much more. If the failures of the defense and special teams can be corrected or cleaned up, LSU can be really good, because this offense knows how to score uptempo.
PS. LSU needs to add the elite freshman Perkins more in their blitz packages. Bet he doesn’t miss the QB.

I watched the 1st half and they didn't.
The D looked like what happened under miles where they eventually got tired.

The defense kept us in the game

Part of that is on them for not getting off the field on 3rd down. They weren't terrible but you have to get off the field.

They didn’t, 24ppg would’ve been middle of the pack for SEC defenses last season, 23ppg would’ve been 3rd worst in scoring.

The LSU defense never got on track, nor the special teams but the offense sure did.

The D couldn’t get off the field. They were on the field too long. We need better LB play. Hopefully Perkins gets in there against Southern.

No, the defense kept the offense OUT of the game. So many of you are fooled by the relatively low score, but the time of possession given up was a killer.

Meh, offense and defense were both poor. Neither was ready to play.

Now do the same stats on a per possession basis keeping in mind that the low number of possessions is directly on the defense.

LSU had one short drive in the first half. That was the three and out. One quick turnaround on D. They also had a drive that lasted damn near 9 minutes. I’m calling BS

I think part of that problem was they couldn't get a stop on 3rd down and get off the field.
Blame themselves

The offense put the team in position to score 27 points in 7 possessions if not for the blocks. That’s almost 4 points per possession. Compare that to the 49 points they hung on Florida last year in 12 possessions, which was just over 4 points per possession. The offense played well. They just didn’t get a lot of opportunities.

Once again D was a major issue with this. The average team gets 12 possessions a game. We got 8. 34.5 points looks quite a bit better. Not to mention 7 taken away due to a blocked field goal (special teams) and a snap over the head (center on his first drive ever)

The defense did not wilt because of conditioning. I'm willing to say they weren't this physically prepared even to start Aranda's last season.
They just did not tackle from play 1 on. If they were in the same crappy physical condition they were for the UCLA game, FSU would have put 40 on em'.
If both teams are playing their first game - or each has played one - LSU wins by 13 or 10 on a late TD.

I’m willing to bet that’s the best 3rd down conversion percentage FSU has had against an SEC or ACC opponent in the last 10 years.

I don’t think it did.

We moved the ball when FSU went to a 3 man front and played very soft.
Until then, nothing.

They had 7 possessions and scored on 4 of them and had a FG blocked on another
The defense didn’t give them enough possessions
