Critical season for O. If he doesn’t win a NC or SECC this year, he never will and it will be time for LSU to move on to a new coach.

Were you in a coma in 2016?

The LSU players literally carried their Head Coach off the field following the 2015 reg. season finale because they AND THE COACH thought it was his last game at LSU. 20 minutes later everyone found out it wasn't, but clearly there were serious discussions to remove the HC.

So going into the 2016 season LSU was:

Ranked in the top 5;
in the midst of 5 game losing streak to Alabama
Returning several key players from the previous season, including guys like Fornette, Adams, Beckwith, White, etc., etc. along with...
the #2 ranked recruiting class
A new DC (Aranda) that everyone desperately wanted.

Expectations going into 2016 were arguably higher than they are going into this season. Plus, Les was clearly on some degree of a hot seat going into the season considering many wanted him fired after the previous season.

While this is probably the first time since the 2016 season that expectations are very high, I'd hardly call it the most critical in a decade, or even the last 4 years.

I think we return an incredibly talented team, but Alabama has 9 potential 1st round picks on next years team, so let's set realistic expectations. I think we win 10+ games next year and are very good, but the expectation cant be national championship or bust.

Yep. That's Olympic level stubbornness.

2015
"Les we're thinking about firing you because your offenses are atrocious and you refuse to budge."

"OK. I will change the offense."

2016
“Uh, you said you'd change the offense to keep your job."

“The engine is pretty stinkin' good."

actually think last year was the most critical with the lingering doubts about the Orgeron hire. Which for the moment have pretty much been erased.

For going 9-3 (5-3) with the worst loss to Alabama in 16 years and finishing outside the top 10 before bowls are picked???

No, that didn’t erase any doubts about his ability to get LSU back into serious contention for championships.

That said, they’re all critical in today’s win-now environment.

Agreed.

I will say 2016 was more critical.

Everyone knew and accepted that it was win the West or there would be a regime change.

While I think it should be the same standard this year, I don’t think it will.

This team is capable of going 11-1.

But I don’t think going 10-2 or even 9-3 AGAIN will actually be enough to get him fired. Though it should imo.

8-4 would do it though, but this team is way too good to drop that far.

10-3. I love when the folks who have some serious issues toward the current HC leave out the bowl win LOL! Last year was hot seat time. That is no longer the case. With the bad comes the good. We have a great shot at 10-2 and a realistic shot at 11-1.

Enjoy if you can. For those folks who hate O so much they want him and the team to fail at all costs, sounds like a personal problem y'all need to deal with. The rest of us could care less for your issues:).

Now we have a good 2019 recruiting class and will be able to win on talent alone for the next few years

We finished 4th in the sec in recruiting in 2019.

No, last year was. We needed to win with that schedule. We had to revitalize the positive energy around the program. Now more players have returned for their Sr years, we finished with a top-10 recruiting class (filling needs), and are kicking the 2020 cycle in the arse right now. Last season set the tone for what we can be. This year needs to set the tone for what we will be. In 2019 and onward!

I just wonder how the goalposts will be moved this season in order to save face for the "but he's one of us" coach. Any guesses on what the media-pushed narrative will be in order to temper expectations for the masses? Should be coming in mid-August. Last year it was the "difficult schedule".

At least 11-1 or bust this season. Otherwise, we're just wasting our time.
