Any word on Mike?
by TheCaterpillarquote:
Are you saying that every one of Mike's caretakers from 1935-2013 were idiots? They didn't have any problem getting Mike into his travel cage to circle the stadium before games.

They cattle prodded him until relatively recently.

No. They didn't.

And no matter what Pete Carroll says (a player for the U. Of Pacific who played LSU in 1972 in DV), the LSU Cheerleaders never 'poked a stick into the cage to get him to growl.'
First of all, that would be impossible since there were always TWO barriers in between Mike and the outside of the bars.

This quote right here tells me that even the best vets on earth have no fricking clue what a Tiger is thinking or what it wants to do.

I'd love to see him at the games but will accept most of the reasons for not doing so if it's really as stressful for him as the experts say. But the statement that "He would die if released into the wild" is pure BS. A Tiger is a extraordinarily strong and instinctive animal and would more than take care of itself with no problems - with the exception being a poacher's gun.

You think that doesn't stress him the frick out in that cage on the field with people screaming at him?

Dude... He's a tiger, he'll be fine. Go eat a veggie burger and hug a tree.

Its not this tiger that is different, its the way they treat him.

They no longer drug and force him into a tiny cage to be paraded around inside an insanely loud stadium with 100k drunk people screaming at him. Could you imagine what that's like for him? I bet its absolutely terrifying.

I don't blame Mike for not wanting to do that and I certainly don't blame the vet staff for not putting him through that. Big cats are going extinct, do we really want to treat our beloved mascot like that?

People need to get the frick over it and realize this is bigger than their want to see a Tiger freak out in a cage.

If that's the case we shouldn't have a tiger on campus at all. Turn him loose in the jungle.

All of you backers of the vet staff realize that it's not an issue of getting Mike into the cage, don't you? They have no problem loading Mike up when they want to. They love to parade him around at the vet school, they load him up for vet appointments and such.

All they need to do is get him accustomed to the routine of attending the games and rewarding him in some way. My dogs love to ride in the truck so I can't even pick up my keys without my two dogs going nuts. Repetition breeds familiarity and content.

I have an inside source and he says Mike doesn't like the Les Miles clause in the contract they're offering him.

Yep. This is the one thing that proves the "can't load him" line is BS. The current staff has decided that they dont want Mike at the games based on how they feel about the situation. It isnt a Mike thing

Very few things make LSU fans looks dumber then drawing comparisons from Mike a live 500 lb tiger to Fido, their beagle.

Understand there are things in this world that the people on this board don't know ANYTHING about. One of things, how to take care of Mike. Let it go.

It's a shame we are losing such a cool tradition that sets us apart from other schools.

Just having Mike, a live Tiger, with an awesome natural habitat, sets us apart from ALL other schools. He does not need to be forced into a cage and paraded around the stadium for us to have and keep "a cool tradition".

I'm speculating but I think it comes down to Ethics. Taking or "forcing" the animal into a cage to go to a doctors appointment is pretty clearly for his own good and acting in his best interests, even if he doesn't know it.

You can't say the same for the game day tradition. It's strictly for the fans and at the cost/welfare of the animal. How much? Who knows, not me. And most definitely not you.

I trust the LSU vet school to make the best decisions for Mike and support their approach.

7 days. The entire year consists of 7 home games. The tiger will survive.

The fact that you have made this your cross to bear is insane. Can you shut up about this and worry about something that matters?

I'm sorry you can't accept that the people, who are trained to do this work, don't think like you, who isn't. We both know you don't really know what you're talking about at all, and more importantly so does the vet school. Know what you, know what you don't know.

Don't like it? Go get a vet degree, get lsu to hire you, and change the program. And since we both you aren't going to do that, do yourself a favor and let it go.
