They will NOT have TWO teams from one conference !!
SEC had 2 of only 2 in 2011 season. Big 10 almost had 2 of only 2 in 2006 season.
It's not implausible at all that the SEC could get 2 teams out of 4 into the playoff depending on season.

I think this new playoff system greatly helps LSU. Even though they may not finish in the top 2, their schedule is usually always respectable and can compete with the best.

Those of you against the playoff are just scared of the unknown
The playoff is not going to be the wonderful fix-it determining who's really "best" in college football that a lot of proponents think it will be. At the end of the day there will be those "other" uninvited teams with strong records and credentials who will be on the periphery making rival claims to being best. And fan bases who will back these illicit claims to the death. What will there be then, a football NIT for them? Oh, that's the role of the bowls? To scoop up all the uninvited and "losers"? How is that any different than now, except the bowls are now recast a tier or two lower in prestige from the playoffs and will be perceived as a boobie prize for the uninvited.

So a 4 team playoff starting this year after we've basically had a 2 team playoff for almost 20 years, somehow equates to NIT in MBB?
Simple laughable.

quote:What is laughable is the lack of understanding of the economics of the bowl system. If/when the perception sinks in that bowls, even the big name bowls, no longer mean anything (and aren't even given the false BCS stamp of approval), fans will begin thinking twice about paying big bucks for the tickets to what will essentially have become a non-prestige game. Attendance will plummet, weaker bowls will evaporate, and eventually this wonderful bowl season we've all loved (or loved to critique) will go the way of the passenger pigeon.
Simple laughable.

don't really know...that decision will be made by a secret group of folks based on some secret criteria...
but a member of the president's cabinet is on that comittee, so you can rest assured that there will be no monkey business...

Then why hasn't this already happened when the 4 major bowls were deemed the big 4 BCS bowls? Everything you just warned about should have happened then. It didn't.
You have zero clue what you're talking about.

They would never, ever leave out an SEC champion.

What are you talking about ? 3/4 teams from once conference ? They will NOT have TWO teams from one conference !!
The SEC will get the benefit of the doubt over all other conferences when it comes to getting two teams in. 3 or 4 teams is extremely unlikely though.

Same question in 2007 would get the same responses. It's tough to predict college football these days.
Best example, auburn in the title game last season

I'm of the mind that this stupid committee is going to do whatever they can to leave the SEC out.
I agree. And people that think most years the SEC will get 2 teams in are crazy. It would take a 2011 type season to get 2 in. And that's not even certain.
I also think only 2 teams could not win the SEC and still make it in. Bama and Florida.
Posted on 4/11/14 at 4:00 am to tickfawtiger
Yeah there def could be 2/4 teams from the same conference. LSU and Bama would both have been in if the playoff existed in 2011. And this past season Alabama and Auburn both would have made it.
If 1 conference has an undefeated team, and another team with 1 loss coming against the undefeated team in a tight game, and everyone else in the country has a loss and no quality wins, you'll have 2 teams from the same conference. LINK the executive direction of the playoff system answers a lot of questions about it.

The playoff is going to hurt the SEC in the current 4 team format,
I don't understand why more SEC fans don't understand this. The committee was put together to ensure that the four teams will not necessarily include the four best teams. The committee was put together to make sure that the other big conferences get a piece of the pie.

nope...no way...will never happen.

Based on what!? You do not have ANYTHING to base this off of. The committee was formed to make the selection more like basketball and to take random polls out of the equation when it's known that most of the voters don't watch all the games.

Well, I don't really give a shite about the SEC as a whole, but this could just as easily help us as hurt us. The BCS, in recent years, has given preference to SEC over other conference teams with the same record, and the committee might not. However, consider this year had Ohio State gone undefeated. The BCS Championship game would have been FSU and Ohio State. With playoffs though, the seeding probably would have been
(1) FSU vs (4) Alabama
(2) OSU vs (3) Auburn
I guess it's possible they would have given the (4) seed to Stanford over Alabama if they wanted to give major preference to conference champions, but I doubt they would have. And anyway, even if they had given it to Stanford, it's better for the SEC to have one team in contention for title than none.
Personally though, I hope no other SEC team besides LSU ever makes the playoffs, but that's just me being a hater.
