Any examples of a HC turning it around?

Are there any examples of a coach that had a team operating at a very high level, fall apart (sub 0.500 season), then turn it back around? It seems to me that once that downward momentum is in place, it's very hard to turn around. Chizik and Mack Brown at UT would be examples of this not happening.

Dabo Swinney had a losing record in his 2nd full season as head coach

Dabo is the only rare example. He found what turned out to be the best coordinator in college football and someone that doesn't want a head coach job or to leave.
Nobody else is going to find a hire like that.

It's a valid point/concern.

It wasn’t sub .500, but Saban had a really shitty 02 after winning the SEC in 01 and before a phenomenal turnaround in 03.
And don’t give me the Mauck injury line. Beating Zook in the Swamp was great, but that was not a good team. Other than that we had beaten a bunch of rent a wins and got handled fairly easily by VTech.
Mauck doesn’t prevent us from getting arse raped by Alabama, Auburn, or Texas, and might mean an L against Kentucky.
Maybe we get the win against Arkansas, but it would still have been a big flip flop from 01 to 02 and then 03. We certainly didn’t look like a team about to win the BCS at any point in 02.
So it can happen, but again the odds aren’t looking great.

I would not see he had the program operating at a high level before that second season, therein lies the difference.

Les Miles at LSU. Not sub .500 but 08 and 09 were terrible for LSU standards and then he turned it around. Started in 2010 then 2011 was epic minus one game that shall not be named.

What less never had a .500 or sub 500 season. We had a dip in 08-10 from 05-07 and then a great 11 but after that it was down hill.
I started a very similar thread with just LSU coaches days ago and caused a massive melt full of excuses for O.
I did forget nationwide about how bad Brian Kelly was a few years ago. History says O is finished.

Les never had a losing season, but there was the feeling of a downward trend after 08 and 09.
The next 3 years we were more or less in the NC hunt late into the season before slipping a bit again.

Season will only be sub .500 because of Covid scheduling.
I’m sure you could find a handful of 7-6/8-5 turnarounds just in the last 10 years

That was a good team. It suffered greatly from Mauck's injury and Damien James' dismissal. Though I do think people romanticize pre-03 Mauck's passing a bit.

Randall threw 4 ints (vs 0 TDs) against Auburn and was awful against Bama too. I'd like to think Mauck would've given us a better chance there.

Cholly Mac
We were cranking out 9 win seasons from '69-'73 (only 8 in '71).
Went to the veer sans Mike Miley in '74 (5-5-1) followed by 4-7 in '75.
Recovered and had a couple of nice 8-3 seasons in '77 and '78.

Looks to me like we'd be 5-6 with the Ole Miss game being the deciding factor with the original schedule:
UTSA - W
Texas - L
Rice - W
Ole Miss - TBD
Nicholls St - W
Florida - L
Arkansas - W
Mississippi St - L
Alabama - L
South Carolina - W
Auburn - L
Texas A&M - L

Bear Bryant went 6-5 in 1969 and 6-5-1 in 1970 after 3 NCs earlier in the 60s and another 11-0-0 season.

Only if you assume we beat UT and OM.
We’d be at 5-5 on our precovid schedule. And that’s actually assuming SC was on the schedule and not Missouri, I can’t remember which it was. It would be 4-6 if it was Missou.

From an NC? Only two. Miles’ 08 team and Chizik’s ‘11 squad who both went 7-5 and won their bowls. That’s since the BCS era.
Not the best of company eh?
