Why wouldn't he?
His defensive stats at Samford this year were...
Not awesome.
For most of the year there was another guy starting behind the plate for them and McManus was the DH.
The guess is we're going to grab another guy at least to get some competition going there. Milazzo can't hit and McManus can't defend, and Travinski can't play until late April at the earliest and Wyeth is almost assuredly going to be packed off to Utah Valley State or someplace. That would seem to leave room for another guy.

This. I can’t imagine JJ would find it to be ideal having to go this route with Milazzo and McManus. At least he could take a shot at the Meridian CC guy or someone else who plays well both ways.

The argument that we have three guys coming next year makes some sense to mitigate going after Priester, and maybe you're looking for a one-year transfer portal guy more than him.
But he's sitting there, and he didn't go in the 2nd day. I saw him ranked as high as the #11 catcher in the draft, and now he's looking at 140K or so tops on slot value, and we already have his teammate coming.
And it's like what Johnson said in that interview. He talked about what Garrido told him about not recruiting the top local talent and how that haunts you twice because more often than not that talent ends up playing for the teams who are on your schedule every year. If you don't get Priester it's a pretty good bet somebody else in the SEC West will. I'd be surprised if he actually ends up at Meridian.

No idea who else those teams drafted but sometimes teams will draft unsignable guys later so they can use that money on a different guy, not saying it is or isn’t the case here.

It isn’t. They have to sign the picks in the top 10 rounds or they lose that pick’s slot value from their bonus pool.

We may need to bring in another catcher from the portal. If we were to have kept 1 of Jensen/Moller that would've been great but with Ski hurt and just Millazo and McManus, we may need more depth at that position.
