I'll provide the old fart mixed-marriage perspective.

Bachelors at USL, lived in Lafayette until age 25.
Masters at LSU, lived in Baton Rouge for the past 24 years.

USL fans were terrible when I was there. Sports-- any sports-- were non-events except for a rare an beautiful NCAA hoops tourney appearance. This was before the TA&M win.

In Baton Rouge, I learned that LSU sports are religion. I figured that there's a lot more to be excited about, more tv time, etc. In short, it's just a blast.

One of my Lafayette buddies asked me this week if LSU fans hate ULL. I said most LSU fans barely recognize that ULL exists-- it's just another instate cow college to them. They just don't think about them -- good or bad. They're just beneath notice-- no offense. Playing instate schools is a lose-lose.

Same buddy took the "jealous little brother" role, and talked about funding disparity, so I pointed out that LSU Athletics were "self-funding", and in fact turn a profit, TAF's role, etc. No subsidies whatsoever, unlike ULL. That pretty much ended the conversation.

So, on Saturday, I will wear an LSU shirt and a ULL hat while I watch the game.

Obviously, you are the moron. You are a prime example of the idiot behavior your school breeds. I was at a game that I go to every year to watch two random teams play a game of football. I go every year. I didn't know you people hated LSU so much at the time. I was going to root for y'all while I was there. I didn't ask for it and didn't provoke it.

The idea of a scholarship player throwing a metal bat in the air and acting like an arse is what the sportsmanship comment was about.

GO "F" yourself.

In the late 90's I had a working relationship with Joey Durel. Now the outgoing City/Parish President of Lafayette but then just a business owner whose office was was upstairs at his Johnston Street Pet shop.

I happened to be in his office when word came down that the name change had gone through. The guy was almost pissing himself in excitement, and yet every other word was about LSU. He was asking if I was excited and I just shrugged and told him I didn't see why it mattered all that much. He ranted on and on about how it was all about perception...that simply changing the name would give the appearance of being larger and more successful.

I countered with..."Why not simply get better? Why not attract locals and alumni by actually working to put a better product on the field?"

The inability to do that was all LSU's fault, btw.

Then I REALLY pissed him off and told him, "Joey...I'm a USL alumnus and I can;t wait to get LSU football season tickets. I grew up an LSU fan and nothing about attending USL games while at school turned my into a Cajun fan. If anything, it turned me off. Conversations like this turned me off."

Then I was the problem...not that USL had done nothing to grab and keep me as a fan, just that I didn't blindly support sports programs that had virtually no interest in even trying to get better and fans who DID bother to attend concerned more with the program 50 miles down I-10 they basically never played than with their own.

So...I never call them by that name not because I fear that it will have the affect guys like Durel seemed to think it would...but because they admitted it was nothing but symbolism over substance. It was s shell game. It was Jon Lovitz changing his name to Brad Pitt in the hopes of sneaking into Jennifer Anniston' room...

Get over yourself.

I took grew up in and now live in Lafayette. I too went to LSU. I have always though it would be great if LSU had an instate rival like many other states do. I even attend ULL football games when LSU is on the road or if it is a weeknight game. However, More recently I have been told to go change my shirt while wearing an LSU shirt around Lafayette, bc "you're in Cajun country now" It has gotten me to the point where I just can't stand ULL fans and no longer support their teams in anyway. So frick ULL. I hope we beat them by 40 in both games this weekend.

Well, we can't because we have to "know our place."

That would be like me saying that the entire LSU fan base is trashy because of just a few of their fans decided to shake the Auburn bus a few years back. Don't judge an entire fan base on a few sour apples.

I know, but I'm just tired of the overall attitude of the ULL fans with whom I have interactions. I've shown up to ULL games in a ULL shirt and have been asked why I was there, implying that I shouldn't be. This comes from BIG ULL boosters.

People that wear competitor's shirts and hats to sporting events usually do so with intention. 1% of them "just throw on the first shirt I see". The rest do it to stand out to some extent.

I wear UL gear around Baton Rouge consistently. No one on the street says anything, unless LSU is playing ULL that week. But I know that if I wear it to work, I'll get jokes and shite from my coworkers. If I wear it to an LSU game, I'll have people telling me that I "forgot an L on my hat" or shite like that. I've been tigerbaited. Who cares?

If I don't want shite from people then I don't wear a UL cap that day. If I want to stir up conversation, I wear my gear where I know people will react.

But I don't fricking bitch about it.

When I wore my sweatshirt to that game, I had no intentions. It was the only decent sweatshirt I had at that time. I was in the Quarter drinking with friends and didn't want to carry a jacket around all day. Since that day, I have purchased two Saints sweatshirts to never put myself in a situation like that.

LSU's influence at the legislature not letting them change their name

LSU has a right to voice their opinion on that issue as much as anyone in this state. The Cajuns might not like the LSU, McNeese, and that of the other ULS schools opinion of the name change, but that's life. They can use their power to change it if they can. If they have a need to be pissed at anyone, they should look within the ULS 1st.

Don't get sucked into the hatred

I'm not sucked into anything. I am happy for the Cajun guys and their recent football success within the SBC. I am happy for their success in baseball this season and if they beat us in the upcoming games, more the power to them.

If I was a fan of another state school, I would get tired of having LSU this and LSU that shoved down my throat as well. Thing is, that's life in every state in the nation to some degree. If anyone school/fans want more power in this state, get the fans to fill up a 100, 000 seat stadium. If you cant, stop bitching bout the LSU "influence" cause it's your own damn fault. imo

Being nice to UL fans is like republican politicians trying to get the libitard media to like them. It will never happen. Accept it and play ball.

Do we have to fill it for all four quarters, or just till halftime like LSU?

They do it at Cajun field too, I know plenty of people that leave at halftime to get more food and drink at the tailgating spot and never go back in

if half the people leave death valley at half time, it's still thousands of more people than a full cajun field.

Cajun food is prepared and served at many tailgates at LSU. Cajun food is better than BR food, in general. I love it. That's all I got.

jennyjones, then I suggest you ride around Lafayette the wk/wkend that LSU plays bama in football. I have seen the bama car flags flying all over town, more than a few bama jerseys being worn. etc etc etc
