I know we were all super excited about our DL coming into this season and then Maason Smith goes down week 1. BJ Ojulari is playing amazing as expected but where has Ali Gaye been? I have been waiting on him to make some impact plays.

Is he being double teamed? Is he not living up to expectations? What are your thoughts on him? We need a break out game from him.

I think Perk and Ojulari are just getting to the QB faster than he is.

Was downvoted a lot when I said Ali Gaye was an average to below average SEC Dlineman minus a couple games in his career

Since the first 3 games of 2020 he has 9.5 TFL's and 4 sacks in 16 games. I think he's a good player, but he's not that high impact stats guy he looked like early on his first season here.

He's made some good plays, but I've also seen him struggle to set the edge and give up some long runs.

He doesn’t have that quick twitch you need to be an effective pass rusher…

Imagine this DL if Maason was still healthy.

What a shitty blow that was game 1.

I said the same prior to the season other than I don’t really know the couple games you’re talking about. I know it’s spilled milk but right now I believe our best dline would have been:

Savion Jones
Maason Smith
Mekhi Wingo
BJ Ojulari

The problem is bigger is not always better. He’s big to the point where he’s easy to get a hand on. Believe it or not, our d’line plays better without mason and ali. Still could use Mason, but go back and watch the film and see how our line is able to plug the run better by being smaller

ali gaye is still riding the hype from that 2020 season against miss st and ole miss. Saivion Jones has been better to me.

Yeah. He was 2nd team All SEC so he's done something right.
As long as he - and everybody else - keeps his discipline on every play he's helping somebody make the play whether it's him or not.
That works for me.
Hoping that communication issue with Foucha being new is worked out. You know Heupel will have a play or 2 with the same look and a slight variation of it to get the safety to bite.

Eta: 2nd Team All SEC was in 2020.

I agree I'd like to see more of Saivion Jones out there. Super athletic and great tackler.

He's probably the most overrated player on the team over the last 3 seasons. He had a tremendous game vs Mississippi St. in 2020...then has done very little of note since. I don't think it is unreasonable to suggest Savion Jones should be playing more. In significantly less snaps than Gaye Jones has more tackles, sacks and TFLs. This, despite the fact it would seem Gaye would be in a great spot to make plays with opposing offenses having to focus their attention on Ojulari. Gaye isn't listed as having a single QB hurry to date.

I think what you have in Gaye is what you see with a lot of foreign born players. They have all the physical and athletics gifts you could ever dream of, but they aren't great "football players" because they didn't grow up in a culture knowing and understanding the game. Gaye didn't come to the US until he was 12. He really didn't start playing the game until high school. Think about all of us who have grown up watching, playing, understanding football since we were very young (4-5 years old). Then think about a kid from a foreign country, who has to learn an entirely new language and culture, let alone how to play an entirely foreign game. He's well behind most US born players in that respect.

The higher you move up in the level of play, the more equal the other players you are up against are in terms of raw athleticism. So to be successful against guys who are equally as athletic you have to understand how to beat them. That's tough to do at the college level when you are still somewhat "new" to the game.

I was as critical of Gay last year as I could be. He was horrible in containment all year. Teams would line up and run simple outside veer runs and he was CONSTANTLY beat losing containment.
Hes not making noise against these shite teams? He sure won't show up for the big ones

I agree. Savion Jones needs way more opportunity out there. He has shown up every time he is in the game. I would love for them to play him more in those spots. It’s the same concept of playing Perkins over Mike Jones. We need to put the best 11 on the field regardless of status.

Since we are proving out in the 4th Quarter we can prolly look at it just like in hoops - it's not about the starters, it's about who's on the court/field at the end.
Your 11 best fits.
