Anybody that watched him knew that he was going to be a good major league player for a long time. Just how good he was going to be was the only question. A guy that works that hard, that would be an above average defensive player at any infield, outfield position and catcher is so valuable. It's hard to predict just how good a hitter anyone will be at the highest level, but as much time as he puts in, I just would never have believed that he wouldn't be at least a decent hitter.

I seem to remember that when he got the Astros it took him several weeks to get his first hit and he struggled a lot early. But finally he flipped the switch and it was on after that.

Just playing devils advocate, because I’m in the same camp as you are in regards to Bregs, but he went through a lot of bad slumps while at LSU during very inopportune times. Since getting to the majors I can really only think of one time where he was in as bad a slump as a pro as he was in college and that was the beginning of this season. He’s been an great MLB representative.

He did have a few slumps but I remember Mainieri saying he’s never scene a player slump in batting average so bad while still crushing the ball.

I recall many very hard outs when he was in his “sophomore slump”. I was at the extra inning Ole Miss game that year. Bregman hit two frozen ropes, both in extra innings, that would’ve won the game but lined out to outfielders both times. It’s baseball. The best thing about pro ball is there’s time for the law of avarages to even out. That’s why I knew he would be a star at the major league level. That’s also why the pros knew and he was selected #2 overall. They look at quality at-bats. Most fans only look at numbers though.

because after his freshman year, he didn't seem to hit consistently for a "high" average.

meh he hit .316 his sophomore year and .323 his junior year. That's pretty good IMO.
quote:

Not a knock on him, but I think people thought he was going to be a .350+ hitter with 15 HR/year and that just never happened

His junior year he had a .947 OPS. I'd say that's strong, to quite strong.
quote:

He never led any LSU team in batting average or homeruns either

and? He led the team in OBP, OPS, 2B, BB, set an LSU single season record for SBs, and had the fewest Ks on the team. But you're right, he was less than impressive

I didn't say he wasn't a really good player

well I never said he was less than impressive. You're making up shite and not evening staying on topic. And I don't even know where you got that he set the LSU record for SB because that's just not true

Bregman was the unluckiest hitter I’ve ever seen at LSU. So many balls squared up right at people.

you said this

in response to this

You say this almost like he wasn't that good in college either.

So you tell me how that isn't arguing he was impressive

He was coached to hit for average at LSU as a result of the bbcore bats and the former ball
He won the national HS HR Derby by a mile

you're interpreting people's opinion that he's a better pro than college player(he is) as saying that he wasn't good in college.

He was a really good college player who came in with enormous expectation and ability. I'd argue he was never the best player on any LSU team though, not a knock on him.

And now he’s leading the defending WS champs in homers with a wooden bat facing major league pitching playing in major league parks.

But muh pulmonary one time champion....

shocking a 20 year old would improve after 3 years of professional year-round coaching and focus on baseball.

shocking that a coach refuses to let the big dog eat and tries to play small ball after getting beat by UCLA a decade ago

we went 54-12 Bregman's last year here and made it to Omaha. Why don't you tell me about all of the coaches who have won multiple national titles since Mainieri has been the coach here....(I'll give you a hint, there is one coach and he's not coaching anymore)

actually I guess he does now with him winning one Mainieri's first year here and now this past year, so one active coach.
