We are talking about 2 different things when we say who is the greatest baseball player and who had the best career at LSU. Belle was for sure the best baseball player, but didn't have the best career at LSU. Walker and Furniss showed up at LSU polished players. Walker is the only 3 or 4 year player that was at an all american level for his entire career from start to finish. Just like Nola had a better career than McDonald, It was only his junior year that McDonald had a better year than Nola and we are splitting hairs to say that.

The kind of student that Belle was, I would be surprised if he didn't graduate from college somewhere. He was a good student his 3 years at LSU and both parents are educators.

frick a bunch of Joey Belle, dude was a piece of shite.

His dad was one of my former coaches. When he was a kid, he and his brother were two of the nicest kids I'd ever met.

His antics at LSU were deplorable, and then didn't he try to run over some kids with his car or some shite?

And as far as I'm concerned all of his record in MLB are suspect after the corked bat incident.

Seriously man. Whatever your thoughts are on Belle, its pretty cut and dry he's the best player we've ever had.

It depends a lot on the criteria used...but it certainly isn't cut and dry. Alvin Dark has a great case...you should look into his accomplishments.

Yeah, not sure what happened but there was a major transformation that occurred at LSU

The ultimate suspension was due to the MSU fan that was heckling him and I'm sure it was valid and if he wants to go in the stands so be it.

That was not the reason he was kicked off, it was a pattern of behavior and that was the last straw.

You could be right. I really don't know enough about Alvin Dark, but I did see in person almost all of Joey Bell's games at Alec Box and he was pretty amazing here. And when considering the best ever, it's hard for me to not evaluate the ball player everyone becomes after LSU. If we are just saying his collegiate career, Belle is still top five but throwing in his MLB career it is difficult to say anyone turned out better. I think many people undervalue his career because of his shitty attitude and that's understandable but really doesn't matter. Dude could play baseball.

I bought up all of Belle's rookie cards and followed the Indians' box score religiously as a kid.

What a lousy investment that turned out to be.

Albert used to be known as "The man Will Rogers never met".
Just last year Deadspin did an article that concluded "he's still a world class a-hole."

went to Huntington with Joey. He's a good guy. He just had a temper. Many people don't know this but he was also a great pitcher and could have started at strong safety for the Tigers as a freshman.

My dad graduated from Huntington in 1982, played ball with him. Small world.

Actually, just asked him about Joey Belle, and if he thought he was racist, like some here are saying. Dad said he was one of the nicest guys at school. Said all his problems started st LSU.

His twin brother, Terry Belle, also played for LSU, was killed in a car accident in 2011.

I would vote to change the entry requirements. In this day of the best players leaving early, we should certainly remove the requirement that a member have a degree. Not everyone can be the Big Aristotle. Any LSU sports hall of fame without Pete Maravich in it has no credibility in my opinion. I would also vote to let Belle in no matter how big of a jerk he is.
