As mentioned several times over the years, I Went to high school with Joey. Very quiet and popular. He was the original Laron Landry at safety and could have earsily played both sports at LSU.

What made him go crazy?

A former Boy Scout, he attained the rank of Eagle Scout. Belle attended Huntington High School in Shreveport, where he was a star baseball and football player, a member of the National Honor Society and vice president of the local Future Business Leaders of America. He graduated sixth in his class

His demeanor changed in college. All
I know is the dude was Mr. HHS and was liked by everyone. I was a freshman when he was a senior. I was the only white boy in the entire basketball program (he didn’t play). He always made it a point to speak to me or at least high five me when we saw each other.

Here's an article from 1991 on Belle. I don't think we'll ever understand exactly what changed in him from high school to college but it does explain a little bit about his personality as an athlete, which a lot of times can be completely different from how someone acts in other areas of life.

and another from 1996

He just seems like two different people when he's on the field and off of it or in the purview of the media or outside of it.

I have about a dozen of those cards and all of his rookie cards still. Followed his Indians career religiously. Too bad he’ll never make the HOF.

He was a hyper competitive a-hole. Add steroids and he's a textbook case. I loved him.

I still remember a HR he hit in a midweek game.

The ball disappeared into the dark more than half way up the light standard.

It landed by the married student apartments.

Or it is still rolling down Nicholson.

I'll never forget my dad saying we had to leave before the game was over (I was young, he probably wanted to avoid trouble), we were across Nicholson from right field walking to the car, bottom nine, Joey hits a walk off (to right as he so often did), and we see the ball coming almost toward us. YEAH WE'RE GONNA GET IT!!! No, some Oldsmobile Cutlass coming down Nicholson somehow sees the damn ball coming, slows down where it bounces and hits the passenger door, they open and scoop it up. Was still pretty cool.
