We finally got an umpire that calls things our way and then we have this ABS shite.

Lemme guess. You aren't a fan of fact checking. Tells me a lot.

I’m a fan of correct calls and phasing out the ump show

It is a honest assessment of the pitch, it did not go our way, but it wasn't a strike by 5/16 of an inch.

Beautiful 3-2 pitches misses by 2 millimeters. Umps have always expanded the zone a bit on 3-2. But now we have our digital overloads deciding.

What ABS has shown me today is that it's very much less of an "ump show" than many believed.

Not sure if you've had a chance to see ABS in action in the MLB, but I think they're implementing it very well even this early on.

From what I've seen it's a fairly even mix between batters and catchers challenging calls. Pitchers aren't challenging many calls, naturally. Doesn't slow the game down too much. And a good amount of overturned calls.

It was implemented in the minor leagues previously, so there's a good amount of players who have experience with it.

Anyways, I hope the NCAA adopts it soon. I don't think we'll see as many challenges in college ball as the pros.

Would love it if they would not have widened the plate zone by 2" and extended the zone high and low by about 5% on each. So the challenge zone is not the real zone and therefore favors the pitchers.
Therefore, there was NO REASON for Arrambide to ask for a review that wasn't going to be overturned to a strike when the zone is so big. Wasted a challenge.

I've seen this posted a couple of times tonight but can't find a source. So this is just a guess, correct? Or was this an official change?

I wish they implement the ABS for all games here on out!

I would suggest that the ABS system in the LSU game focused the HPU to do a great job behind the plate.

This was one of the best called games of the Tigers SEC schedule.

Complaining about the ABS system seems foolhardy. This is the first time this season, that there was some kind of accountability behind the plate.

It's a nuanced answer. Compared to MLB, yes, it is bigger. But that doesn't mean it's wrong. MLB's ABS is 17" wide, measured over the white of the plate. The SEC Tourney includes the black of the plate, so 19" total. A lot of umpires call it that way anyway. I personally like the ABS, but wish the SEC had not included the black.

MLB - The top line of the strike zone is 53.5% of the player’s height, while the bottom is at 27% of the player’s height. (3.5% difference)

SEC - The top line of the strike zone is 58% of the player’s height, while the bottom is at 23% of the player’s height. (5% difference)

This is roughly a 6" difference on a 6' tall player.

The MLB ABS zone is smaller than the actual zone. So it's unfair and inaccurate to say the SEC enlarged it 5% up and down.

I also think a lot of people don't realize that any part of the ball hitting the zone equals a strike. The zone starts at the hollow beneath the kneecap. So anytime the top of a ball hits the hollow beaneth the kneecap it is high enough for a strike. This looks low to a lot of people, but the bottom of the zone looked correct to me yesterday. Some ABS strikes looked high to me, but that can always be tweaked.

The important part is consistency. Our fans, like anyone else, always think we are being screwed. Of course, we even had fans last night bitch that ABS was biased against LSU.
