I don’t remember seeing him. Was he hurt or just did not get in?

He will be relied on heavily to produce next year. He was most exciting HS player I’ve seen in years.

I still don't understand what happened with the punt returns. Kelly spent camp hyping up how electric he was, he botched his first opportunity and then we never saw him again. I wondered if it had shown up in camp and once it happened in game, they weren't risking it again.

Very weird. It's like we didn't even try to improve our special teams this year (not even against the cupcake teams). Not a strategy I agree with and I think our special teams sucked again this year.

Idk if it showed up in camp or not but I think Kelly realized we have the best offense in college football and decided he wasn’t going to take the ball out of their hands.

So send the guy out there who is going to catch it and Jayden and company will do the rest. It worked pretty well.

Special teams were fine this year. Good kick and punt coverage. I don’t remember a single blocked kick. Decent kickoff returns for the most part.

We just didn’t return punts. That was a conscious decision.

I understand the thinking, Clayton is a sure handed punt catcher who won't rob the offense of a possession.

At the same time, in my mind, it feels like we're leaving yards on the field by never even trying. Why wouldn't you want to improve the starting field position for Daniels.

Then again, I watched Auburn botch a punt and hand thr game to Alabama yesterday, so bless Fair Catch Clayton for never doing that.

Catching punts was the improvement

Because he’s proven time and time again that he’s going to get those yards anyway.

every game was close this year. With two more muffed punts we could’ve easily went from a potential 10 win season and a heisman trophy winner to a 7 win season and Brian Kelly on the hot seat.

I know which I would prefer.

The problem with that is that we aren't giving our return man any time to get a return. He's surrounding before the ball even gets to him.

What’s funny is I think Bk even said in a press conference he would still be back there after that… then just wasn’t

We just didn’t return punts. That was a conscious decision.

We were ranked 125th in touchback % on kickoffs, we were ranked 129th in opponents kick return yds/game avg, we ranked 124th in opponents' punt avg., and and we were ranked 92nd in opponents' long kickoff returns. They made a conscious decision not to return punts after we had a muffed punt problem in the FSU game for the 2nd year in a row. And we had way too many special teams penalties. We somehow managed to get two offsides penalties on our kickoffs against Florida. You don't expect to see that happening late in the season.

FG kicking was pretty good (though we attempted very few), extra points were excellent, and we didn't allow any punt return yardage (but that was mostly due to having the fewest punts in the nation due to our awesome offense).

It went unnoticed until now because we didn't get that many chances at returning punts.

AA’s situation has been weird all year.

It looked like they were gonna use him heavily on special teams and then after one muffed punt they abandoned that completely the rest of the year.

Would’ve been nice to see him take a few late in some games that were already wrapped up to start gaining back that confidence. Really weird we never gave him another shot, especially if he’s now gonna be the guy next year.

Offensively, it’s even weirder. Sure, Malik and BTJ went off, so you could argue there just wasn’t enough balls to go around. But Denbrock was so gitty before the season when talking about AA and how you have to scheme him into the game plan and get the ball in his hands.

I thought he’d be our slot guy all year and have more play calls specifically designed for him, whether that be screens or reverses.

Just very odd how little he was used in every capacity this year.

That knee injury must have been lingering because he was not the guy everyone saw in high school

Hopefully an off-season of strength training will get him back right

The fans revolted, just like they revolted about Harold Perkins.

Coach Kelly did right. Anderson was not secure with the ball. Since we had the best offense in the country and close to the worst defense. It was way better to be safe with punts since we were scoring touchdowns anyway.
