A trip down memory lane, or how I barely survived an offseason "callout thread"

Sorry pimp, but I win this one

quote:

rivering what was a 2-outer on the flop doesn't make the call the right one

quote:

i just don't think people are giving Joe Burrow enough of the credit in this whole situation. he was an already-developed QB with #1 pick/Heisman potential, who, as you said, had TWO year of IMMEDIATE eligibility. we were on the thinnest ice at QB in 2018 and it was an absolute savior moment. i just wish we would have had a real offense in 2018 to give him 2 years of elite play here

quote:

you do understand that in 2008, there were multiple, similar "eating crow" posts directed at me regarding my stance on Les Miles, right?

2007 didn't invalidate my opinion of miles, and this was all WELL BEFORE he went into complete dinosaur offense

hopefully O maintains after early success better than Miles did, but it's the same situation. hell O gets a great distinction moment in 2020 with the QB. O can show he can recruit/develop a QB (something Miles never could) this year

here is where i was TOTALLY wrong

quote:

i'm not predicting a collapse at this point

I tried replying to you in the other thread but it got whacked...

i didn't want to be THIS right

Man, what’s your take on the why? I’m not an O fan, but this stuff just doesn’t add up to me. (The poon chasing, BLM, Covid, poor hires, etc) None of that explains this level of implosion. Exactly a year ago, Burrow is on the podium in tears talking about O, guys in general seem like they would have run through a wall for him, now no one wants to play for him? It isn’t just the opt outs either. This team generally has played with no fire and no heart this season. Even in the dark days of the 90s, we almost always thought we had a puncher’s chance because we always played hard, Pigs Fly game for example. That’s why everyone was so down before Sat...everyone knew we would mail it in.

We’ve had some less than inspiring games before 2019, but never due to lack of trying.

I get not being as good, with Brennan’s injury even understanding a sub 500 season, but this is nuts.

This is the craziest thing I’ve ever seen. And I was at LSU during the “Crazy Days at LSU” era so I have experience in this area.

I am currently praying to the Asterisk God to take this year away so that we may reset and begin anew...

i think the combo of players coach + too much success out of nowhere + this crazy season = insanity

that trump stuff was bad, too. i don't think it should have been bad, but it was tone deaf

and he had 2 utter disasters of MAJOR hires. guys he cannot frick up on he completely fricked up on

O has created no real culture or structure and it's all just chaos and i think the players realize that he has no idea how to fix it

What doesn’t make sense to me about the Trump part was that they all went to the WH earlier. I always thought the protest controversy was bigger. But even that seems like it could have been smoothed over.

I posted this in an earlier thread. We are on the same page.

quote:

People confuse the CEO model as just hiring assistants and throwing them out there to do their thing. As opposed to the real CEO model that says you have a certain amount of autonomy as long as you operate using a certain framework and philosophy. See Saban, Nick. This is why the Canada thing went bad. If O had a philosophy, he would never have made the hire. People will say well what about last season? Ok fine, then you go find Brady 2.0, instead of riding with middling arse Linehan. Maybe you miss, but you miss for the right reasons and imo your chances of missing go way down. “I was disappointed with the offensive game plan” I.e he didn’t know what it was. A real CEO knows where the limo is going even if he isn’t driving.

we will likely be so depleted on our roster that this will take a cycle and a half of recruiting to fix

it was just bad timing + having that idiot Ryan Clark fanning the flames on major national media

it's insane, but the world is insane right now

O hired Canada b/c of the rant

if you remember, O was doing his publicity/PR/goodwill/apology tour in 2016-2017 and basically reversing all sorts of policies/behaviors that message boards were attacking Miles for. i mean Derek P was clearly online and basically made a "to do" list to appease the masses online

when O couldn't land Kiffin, we all were promoting Canada....so we get Canada to make us happy

quote:

then you go find Brady 2.0, instead of riding with middling arse Linehan

O clearly values loyalty and highly values E for this. i think he wanted a retread to ensure no more 1 and done years

same at DC, which was an unmitigated disaster. even if you want to defend BoP, you can't defend the contract

Aranda got his insane deal b/c he's a better coach (on field, not CEO stuff) than O and we had to maintain with O at the helm (remember at the time of the deal, we were reeling from the Canada disaster). there is no such justification for Pelini to get the same sort of money

For a coach like O to work long term he's got to be an elite recruiter and a top notch evaluator of assistants. He's clearly not very good at #2.

It's as if Coach O learned nothing from the Gundy OAN T-Shirt.

You don't want to seem insensitive to the players about social issues, and what's the best part? You can still vote TRUMP when you get in the voting booth, and no one will ever know.

What gives you this idea?

Not saying you're wrong, but that's an interesting take.

He filmed an endorsement for JBE

He might not be a libtard but, and I know this will shock this board to its core, one can be a democrat and not an extreme liberal.

the true coach o finally returned as we all knew he would. i appreciate the random pit stop at a national title, but figured this would happen around 2018. guess joe burrow is that damn good.

his recruiting has left major holes also. processing loyal commitments for big fish, but then coming up empty. then we are having to depend on ivy league transfers to step in and start.

I agree. Could last year have happened without this mindset, though? In other words, could a "perfect storm" occur absent someone without the necessary structure and discipline to prevent ANY storm? That's the goofy thing about this all, it seems.

Don't take my point or questions as taking any position about what should be done with O at this juncture in time.
