I listened on the radio I was a freshman at an LSU system school it was so loud you could not hear the radio announcers .
I listened on radio and it was incredible. The atmosphere was different then for a variety of reasons.
The stadium can still get loud but it isn't start to finish crazy like it was back then.

I'M feeling the 1982 whipping against FSU when everything went our way as LSU received a Orange Bowl bid. The fog came storming into the Stadium.
I was there for that one..

I totally identify with ALL of this... but i still remember that game clearly - amazing place. I can't imagine any other game coming close but hopefully this next one will

Same vibe? Hard to say. The problem with these "old timer" questions is that I was so drunk game day back then I don't know how I felt. Now that I've been sober for 25yrs. it's like you're asking me to access another personality.
One thing I do remember is that Tiger Stadium on a Saturday night was a huge advantage for us against any ranked team. Whole lotta magic!

Not even close. This one is all made up by ESPN, CBS and gumps.
In the USC game it was David vs Goliath and believe me people were different in Baton Rouge in that decade. They cared. Tailgaiting was very secondary to getting inside the stadium and the players were worshiped. Today with the blaring commercials I feel more like I'm at an NBA circus.

I don't think the VIBE is the same. I was 13 and was a HUGE USC fan. Rode the greyhound bus from Shreveport and sat with my cousin in the student section. Left the game a HUGE LSU fan.

Absolutely not! The talent gap between the two teams was wide. But LSU began the season 2-0 with a 44-0 win @ Colorado and a 47-3 win over Rice. Optimism was high and the vibe was very positive even though we knew the Tigers were overmatched by a lot. This is why Tiger Stadium was so electric that night.
The contrast with the negativity around this game is stupid. There is no talent gap and LSU has a 50/50 chance in this game to be squarely in the MNC hunt.
And don't give me the Les Miles blah, blah, blah.....stuff. '79 was Cholly Mac's last season and he hadn't beat Bama in my lifetime. Fans were ready for a coaching change, but there wasn't near the negativity surrounding games like there is now.
Tiger fans, you need to seize the moment this Sat night.

That LSU team was mediocre at best. Valiant effort, but the real LSU team played out throughout the season. In their defense, it was a strange season where after the Alabama game in '78 it was announced that McClendon would ahem, "retire" after the '79 year, plus their was a brtual schedule with Southern Cal and Florida State (11-0 in regular season) as non-conference team.
The Miles haters and Sabanistas can knock this LSU team all they want, but they are ignorant. An LSU win Saturday would not be "shocking" in the least.

people are forgetting that later that year LSU had to play another number 1 team in Tiger Stadium- - Alabama. Bama won 3-0.

yea, the vibe was similar, not the hype tho. today's media saturates the coverage of events. but usc coming to town in those days was like notre dame coming to town. every red blooded LSU fan was pumped regardless of the "chances of winning". it's hard to be exact recalling big games in Tiger Stadium over the last 50 some odd years but other than curly's time and spurrier's when he invented the passing game in the sec, LSU has stepped up big time. beating bama saturday would be no surprise to me, none at all.

Enjoying all us old timer remarks...very accurate. I was a soph that year and have been to tons of games before, then and since. Without question, the most electric Tiger Stadium has ever been. Not only so load you could not hear the guy next to you, but in unison chants of 78k fans with hot boudin, tiger bait, push me back, etc...getting goose bumps with the memories.
The biggest difference to this BAMA game...our talent is closer to BAMA vs the talent gap to USC. All the "we are going to get whipped" talk on the rant for this game is actually comical. The USC week, their was this strange optimistic build up toward more of an attitude of "this is our shining moment to shock the college football world".
If LSU players, coaches and fans go into the BAMA game with that attitude Sat night, we will WIN!

That's a good comparison. I also remember more recently in 1997 when #1 ranked Florida came to Tiger stadium for night game. We had just lost to Vanderbilt so our chances were slim and none according to the talking heads who apparently misjudged the power of Tiger stadium on a Sat. night that time as well. We whipped them 28-21 and I have a piece of the turf to prove it! MIRACLES ARE AN OPTION! Time to bring back the magic and do it again.... Geaux Tigers!

NO. That LSU team was not near as good as this one. AND IMO this Bama team is not near as good as the 79 USC team.BEFORE THIS game LSU has a shot. Not many people thought the 79 LSU team had a chance.
That's exactly right. We were lowly LSU and they were mighty USC. It was more like "The Mouse That Roared" or "David and Goliath" than "Clash of the Titans".

No, we beat them 7-6 in a ugly squeeker where Cecil the D was hurt.
Yeah, I think it could be comparable to USC 79, a poster some time ago had video footage of the so-called phantom face mask from around the LSU 25 YL and seemed like really could have gone either way and there was a split second false start by USC not called. Anyway, they went on from there to drive the field; Tigers were out of defensive gas and a last second pass from Ensminger? was KO'd to end it! This time we will pull the rabbit out!

Nothing phantom about it
Facemask
However, there WAS movement from the whole right side of the USC line before the play that should have killed the play before it began.
Right side of line moved
Also, look at the replay, USC's QB threw the ball backwards, to an offensive lineman.....Should have had a grounding call also, and offsetting penalties.

I went to both games (was very young), and I can promise you that they weren't the same at all. Mainly because the weather was so rainy and miserable that night. They did put up a hell of a fight against Bama as well, but it was apples and oranges.
A few years ago, someone on the Rant mentioned having taped the USC game off the radio, and he still had the tapes. I'll happily pay to listen to this, so if you're out there...

Charles White was avg. Well over 100 yds. a game and we shut him down.
Was there with Dad and Brother.
I would'nt exactly say we shut him down....I think he went for about 180 yards but LSU D got a couple of turnovers and stiffened in Red Zone.
That LSU team was pretty damn good and sprinkled with NFL talent on both sides of ball. USC was as good as hyped. All Americans all over the place.
The thing I remember the most is the way LSU played with heart.
A few of my favorite Tigers who starred that night: George Atiah(spelling?) nose gaurd was a beast. Chris Williams cornerback with pick. Leroid Jones was solid at RB....Woodley and Ensminger. Benjii Thibodaux with unfortunate face mask that was the difference.
LSU Won the re-match a few years later in the Colliseum 16-0! Wasnt at that one though.
Series tied 1-1.

Ain't this the truth! I think this is why our crowd has become so subdued - we're hungover by halftime.

I was in the student section of the USC game that year. Most fun and intense football game I have ever been to. They had to make us leave the stadium after the game! The difference in this year's LSU-Bama contest is that the talent difference between the two teams was greater for the USC game. LSU was truly David against Goliath. We were there while the Trojans got off the bus, and we were rocking the bus back and forth! We made a line/gauntlet for the USC players to walk through and we Tiger Baited the sh$t outta them! Man, they were some big mofos though!! Someone in the north stadium dorm hung a giant condom from their window! That was hilarious! The caliber of talent on our team this year, gives us a much better chance of winning against a Bama team that, top-to-bottom, is not as strong as that USC team was. ALL OF YOU IN THE STUDENT SECTION FOR THIS GAME - MAKE US PROUD BY SCREAMING LOUD!! This one needs to be for the memory books too, and you can talk about this game with your grandkids, like us old farts remember the USC game. Let's win though!! No moral victories here!!

Does anybody else remember the sheet sign hanging from one of the Tiger Stadium Dorm windows that said:
USC
SUC
This is one of my memories as a 14 year old at the game.
