re: A QB "going through progressions" is old methodology. Tua doesn't do it.

Tua is absolutely throwing to a predetermined WR. It won’t work for him in the NFL, but what difference does that make to Alabama?
Alabama also isn’t rolling out 7-8 different WRs dividing snaps amongst themselves. Ruggs, Jeudy and Smith, like Cooper and Ridley before them won’t be Beckham or Landry but like with Tua Alabama doesn’t care at this point.
You have a QB making predetermined reads and only play your top 2-3 WRs 90% of the time and the QB/WR have the reps together in practice and games to build that familiarity and obviously it works.

Gary Danielson said the same thing on the Bama/LSU broadcast (that Tua is locked-in to many passes before the play starts).
Could it be because that primary receiver always had a 1-1 or no safety help over him?
Furthermore, since the plays are designed to go to one guy and one guy only, why the hell do any of the other receivers go run routes?

Tua is absolutely throwing to a predetermined WR.
The OC gameplan pendulum has swung way too far to gross over-analyzing what D will do. Sure, if the D is overloaded to the right - don't throw there. But quick-hitters trump most, if not all defensive schemes.
It's not that complicated. Hit the good-hands guy quick.

One guy per play, genius. And the other routes keep the secondary spread out, genius.

Yes. I think that is true plus he's being given a key to read that creates the if statement I addressed
Where his real strength is is that the ball comes out of his hand about as fast as I've ever seen it even when he has to go to the second read.
He sees the key and the ball is gone

Ohhhh, so it’s not maybe if the primary receiver is covered up, the quarterback can throw it to another receiver?

I think one thing that gets lost when you talk about Tua’s progressions is how much RPO they run. He’s not pulling the ball from the RB then going into a 5-step drop.. that would take way too long to develop.
But that doesn’t mean he’s not reading the field. He’s got his eyes on the safety the whole time, and when he sees that he has the matchup he wants he pulls the ball from the RB and throws it immediately. If he hesitated and went through additional reads at that point the RPO wouldn’t be as effective. It also helps that his WRs are fast as hell.. they can get open after he throws the ball. I haven’t seen our guys show that kind of speed.
Anyhow, I dont think you can compare his actions on an RPO to a traditional 5-step drop pass play.
