That is negotiating...
Stupid logic. The reason the networks bid so high and pay so well to cover the SEC is because they love showing our games in their prime time slots. LSU plays some of the best games because we are a damn strong football team.
How does that work exactly if the SEC is trying to get the most money from the networks and allow LSU to throw in some kind of clause that you can't move all of our games?
Quit fighting this stuff and looking like fools. The SEC is going to do what is best to get the most money for all of the schools. End of story.
There is no negotiating on LSU's behalf.

Its all BS. If this was Alabama's tradition CBS was screwing with, CBS and the SEC would back off. Where are our attorney's & negotiators?
The gumps have been bitching that all of their games are being played at night for ESPN. The SEC has both LSU and Alabama fans pissed to some degree.

Then they should tell that to whoever is AD in 2023, and not get pissed at Alleva.

Lobbying for a clause to allow you to insure one night SEC home game per season is not an unreasonable request in such negotiations.
What leverage do we have to demand such a clause? What do we threaten if our demand is not met? Will the other 11 members get to include a clause of their own as well? We--not me, but you crybaby count--bitch about Bama getting preferential treatment, but isn't this EXACTLY what you are crying for?
And this "1 SEC homegame" is retarded. Mainly because this is the 1st I've ever heard of it. But sure as night follows day, if the they had made Kentucky a night game this year, you crybaby count would be moving the goalposts to "1 'good' SEC night home game a year."
frick, y'all are embarrassing.

I'm glad he sent this letter. Shows he's getting some heat. Sadly I agree with everything he says, but still wish something could be done. Oh well.

An unholy alliance?
For the good of football?

The truth is that we can blame our SEC brothers for not being worth a shite this year. UGA looked very bad out of the gate against Boise State and then lost the next game to USC. And UGA doesn't play any of the top 3 from the West (which means the top 3 of the SEC), UF and UT are still down, State and USC couldn't handle the bright lights. Ole Miss and UK suck, and Vandy is still irrelevant. That leaves 4 teams worthy of CBS.
This year is a very unusual year, and likely won't be repeated anytime soon. Sucks for LSU fans, but it's not like this is going to happen every year.

Then during contract negotiations, maybe Alleva should do his damn job and lobby for LSU to get night games.
This.
A lot of people don't understand that you can't change the rules in the middle of a contract. However, with the addition of A&M+1 the SEC will be in a position to renegotiate. Now is the time to start lobbying and sucking on peens. That is why we gave him a raise to stay, right?

The only way a "clause" in the contract would work is that every SEC team would have the ability to "veto" 1 schedule move a year. Then when CBS came calling for Auburn, we veto that and let ESPN take over.

As a whole I think the SEC is in a much better position to approach CBS and basically say... We have the most passionate fan base, the most competitive conference and the most BCS champions in the last decade... If you don't want to broadcast a saturday night game of one of our SEC brethren, fine. We will talk to someone who will....
Why would the SEC do this? LSU has no leverage here unless we are willing to leave the SEC, which would be beyond fricking retarded. Like most of you.

So, basically the only way to avoid this "problem" would be to either withdraw from the SEC or not be as interesting to the networks (i.e. not be as good as we are).
Alabama must suck then because they are rarely playing at 2:30 this year.

This is exactly the problem. Even being ranked No 1, there should be a want by the networks to give you variety. Unfortunately, that variety typically would involve a game between #10 and #21, and this year its between two unranked teams. The problem is simply this year....there are no other appealing games. This weekend, for example, if UT was half of a sqaud playing a big rivalry game against #2 it would be picked up. Instead, CBS doesnt want to show a 45-3 game.

While we would like to insert exemptions into the TV contracts, which expire in 13 years, there are other schools that would want to do the same.
I take this as a tacit admission by Alleva that he dropped the ball and did nothing to lobby for a night game clause for LSU in the SEC contract.
He's embarrassed because he was caught by surprise by the "oddity" of this year.
quote:
Please be assured we strongly express our feelings to the SEC and they are very aware of our desire to play at night.
Well it's good to know that you are expressing our feelings now that it's too late to put into the old contract.
quote:
It is one of the reasons there is a stipulation that not more than one game can be moved to the morning (11:20 a.m. slot) from night, because of our continued insistence to not inconvenience the fans who are used to night games.
Well, no shite. But according to many super sophisticated posters around here, I thought something like this could never happen, because it would mean that the SEC was losing revenue for the sake of ignorant LSU fans.
Posted on 10/18/11 at 8:44 am to drexyl
what nobody is mentioning, most especially alleva, is that cbs can, and indeed has, shown sec night games instead of yet more reruns. there's no reason why cbs can't choose to show lsu in that timeslot especially if the other schools like bama prefer the afternoon slot.

The leverage is clearly that there are other networks that can take the contract, or do you think no one else wants it? Or is it merely that you don't think our school holds ANY influence in the sec and can't negotiate/compromise with other schools (more schools more leverage) to keep a tradition?

I totally agree. It's just a weird year. We're really good, the SEC is relatively down, and our good games have fallen on weeks without much competition. This is not going to be a regular occurance.
