Of all the colorful figures that have come through LSU few if any were more colorful-- or polarizing as Dale Brown. After Press Maravich was dismissed the initial leading candidate was Gene Bartow of Memphis State. One other guy who's name was tossed around-- and as that goes those guys themselves aren't alwasy interested-- was none other than.....Bobby Knight.

From 1979-1992 LSU was a player in the NCAAs,SEC and television. As for Knight, keep in mind that his comment after the 1987 MW Regional "when I looked down and saw Dale Brown I knew we could win" came six months after the game after Brown had expressed what a "bully" Knight was in the wake of the 'telephone' incident in Cincinnati where Knight really should have been ejected. Immediately after that game Knight was extremely complimentary of Brown and LSU.

IMO,Dale should have resigned the day O'Neal turnred pro. But along the way he had 4 SEC Regular season titles, and SEC Tournament Title, Two Final Fours and two more Elite Eights. LSU was also the first SEC team to have consectutive number one seeds in the NCAA Tournament.

Wasted more talent than any other coach ever.

Kentucky come from behind during Mardi Gras was the worst coached game.

Dale strongly implied, in hindsight, that he would have retired had either the 81 or 86 team won the National Championship.

For those that aren’t familiar with the 81 team, I will just tell you that they were every bit as talented as the 89 team (Shaq, CJ, Stanley, etc).

In all fairness to Les, he won a National Championship and played for another.

Dale haters are mostly younger people who gave no idea how dead LSU basketball was before Coach Brown. The biggest testimony to his legacy is the overwhelming praise he gets from his former players.

Then our spineless former AD let former players strong arm him into hiring one of his bag men

He can now fade in the dust bins, he caused much damage and in my opinion, he continues to disrupt……via his henchmen

Players came and went with the same amount of talent they arrived with. He was more lucky than good.

Hated to see the court named after him. Not earned. Did well enough to stay, but not to have something named after him. Would rather see it named for Shaq due to his earned success.

“It didn’t look good,” Knight said. “In fact, my assistants had just about given up, and so had I. Then I looked down toward the other bench, and I saw Dale Brown standing there. I knew then that we had a chance.”

Likely. Or the time at the end of his career where UK scored 86 in the first half. Both losses were embarrassing.

But on the opposite end of the spectrum, one of his best was beating the #1 team and 1978 eventual national champion Kentucky with all 5 starters fouled out of the game in OT. That UK team never lost again after LSU beat them and finished 30-2.

He also gave UK their biggest loss in Rupp Arena history which stands to this day at 35 points.

And beating 32-3 UK in the NCAA tourney to advance to the Final Four after they had beaten LSU 3 times during the season was also one of his best.

Dale had epic wins against those phenomenal UNLV teams, Loyola Marymount, Arizona, Georgetown & Notre Dame in the Dome, etc. He blew his share of games, but he also scheduled and beat some phenomenal teams.

I'll never understand why Maurice Williamson took the last shot against GA Tech.

Actually I do. He was a ball hog. That team had too many alphas. But they were so fun to watch.

Actually Mo led the team in assists even as the 2 and Brown often took the ball out of CJs hands that season once we got comfortable leads vs good teams. Go back and watch the UNLV game, CJ had 26 in the first half then took like 6 shots in the second because once the lead got to 9-10 points Brown just tried to pound it inside the entire second half until we nearly blew the game then CJ was given the ball again.

I disagree with the wasted more talent argument .
Here are some facts . Almost all teams that win the tournament are led by a future nba star or superstar

Except for Shaquille … lsu never had one of those while at lsu yet we managed to win a lot . I would think Dale Browns coaching was probably better than given credit for and his recruiting was over hyped and not quite as good .
We lost to Michigan State in 79 . They had two pretty good NBA players on Greg Kelsey and jay Vincent and a future nba hall of famer in magic Johnson . We had Dewayne Scales who lasted a little over a season in the nba

In 1980 we lost to Louisville with Dr dunkenstien Darrell Griffith

In 81 it was future hall of famer Isiah Thomas .
You can add up lsu 1981 final four team nba experience together and not get over six years total with Rudy macklin having them bulk of it

When we lost to UTEP when we had Chris Jackson they beat us with a little known guard named Tim Hardaway . Chris Jackson went on to a career as a marginal nba player. Hardaway became rookie of the year

How about navy with David Robinson nba hall of famer. We had John hot plate Williams who sports illustrated said was a whale looking for a place to beach himself
Jerry Reynolds … started 41 games on his entire NbA career
Nikita Wilson no nba time at all
Well what about Shaq. By the time we got Shaq , whose offensive game was almost non existent in college , the three point line was installed making guards more important
Howard Carter lasted one season.
Tree Green. Little nba time
Ethan Martin never made it
Willie Sims never made it
Leonard Mitchell nope
Ricky Blanton. Signed a ten day contract with the Bulls and saw lowlights of his on Tv where they called him the worst player in NBA
And on and on and on .

You old Dale sycophants are as bad as the woodward can do nothing wrong sycophants

Using your example, Wade is beloved by his former players which according to you is the biggest testimony to his LSU legacy
