4th time watching Clemson vs OSU - few notes

I watch a lot of football in general, and what I’m seeing is really surprising.
- The routes, route running and route concepts ran by both teams were embarrassing. Middle school level stuff. I’m shocked to see this from 2 elite programs. A far cry from LSU’s intricacies in design and execution. No wonder the coverage was so good from both defenses. I no longer have the same respect for Higgins and Ross. OSU was a little better than Clemson in concepts and execution but not by much.
- To say Venables is aggressive is an understatement. His gameplan vs OSU was straight up wreck-less and arrogant. No matter the results.
- To this same point, Clemson defense sold out to the run game almost entire game. More like sold their souls to it. It wasn’t just the sheer numbers in the box personnel wise, it was the positioning.
- And to this point, even with positioning their LB’s 2 - 3 yards from the LOS (almost unheard of) AND their 2 safeties 10 yards from the LOS 90% of the time, they still couldn’t stop OSU running the ball. It actually hurt them because their LB’s and S’s had very little margin for error in reading the play. Once Dobbins was to the 2nd and 3rd level, they were already beat.
- OSU O-line dominated Clemson in the run game.
- And to this point, the only thing that stopped OSU from running the ball successfully was OSU’s decision to throw the ball.
- Clemson CB’s are good at finding the ball in the air.
- Clemson’s zone coverage was very impressive the few times they ployed it. They should mix that in more against LSU.
- Clemson WR’s couldn’t handle OSU’s hands-on physical play at CB. Were flustered the whole game. Aranda and LSU DB’s should feel good about this matchup.
- Etienne is the only player that scares me. No surprise.

Burrow changes everything. Justin Fields is good. Joe Burrow is generational.

This is where Brady is so damn good. Whatever the Clemson D throws at LSU, Brady will recognize it. Then he and Ensminger will adjust and make them pay. Their dagger has found flesh in every single game this year. No reason Clemson will be different.

quote:thought so too. Studwra (whom I think is an awesome coach) has been very maligned this year because of the number of sacks and pressures. Somewhat skewed because of the type offense they ran. But I also watched them against PSU and Wisky and if they didn't whiff, they get great push and get to 2nd level very quickly.

Parts of that game is exactly how an OL can block fairly consistently against a stunt-loop-happy DC. Don't chase blocks. If a stunt beats you to a spot, go put a hat on somebody else and trust they guys around you to pick it up. tOSU OL did a good job of that. I expect us to also.
quote:would guess we'll see the mixed zone-man to try and get some turnovers. When, not if, the read that matters is the WRs first, then Burrow. The WRs will have to pick the routes based on 'false leverage' and Burrow will have to see it. This somewhat nullifies the 'check with me', so the WRs will have to recognize it.

quote:Indeed. He'll make you pay very quickly for lack of gap control, and if you do he'll test your edge real quick. Him against our LBs in coverage scares me a little; it's very similar to the mismatches we get with CEH. But on the same note I'd hate to see us lose flexibility by having a S responsible for him in coverage also.
- Etienne is the only player that scares me. No surprise.

This is how I see it. Clemson is simply not 4 or 5 TDs better than GA or others. Clemson is good but I’m not convinced they are the best team we have played. I think we beat them easily. To think they have answers that no other team has had is a wishful thinking.

I remember thinking during the game “damn that’s a huge OL for Ohio State.” Maybe Clemson’s dline was undersized, Idk, but OSU OL looked really big.

Clemson is schizophrenic
They will rush 6, drop 8, everything in between.
Their offense gets stuffed, stuffed, then TE or sunshine gets open and break a big one. The girl they have throwing the ball will miss open WR badly, almost get picked, then she will make a beautiful throw on a fade to the corner of the end zone
Their punter punts traditionally for 60 yards, then the next punt is a rugby style kick for 40
Their kicker misses a FG every single game. For whatever reason, must be good luck for them.

quote:this is well documented. They can't afford to run zone much though against Chase, Moss, and CEH, especially without a great dline.

One thing Clemson has going for them is that they’re undefeated and think they’re the best.
That’s why Texas, Florida and Bama played is so tough: all we’re undefeated at the time we played. Once a team loses and realizes they’re mortal, it’s pretty common for confidence to sag and consequently to see a drop in performance.
OU came into the game knowing they needed a miracle, and quit before the first quarter was over. Clemson won’t quit unless we get up by 4 touchdowns or so.
Had OSU converted a couple of those red zone trips early and scored touchdowns instead of FGs, Clemson might have thrown in the towel. A 24-0 or 28-0 deficit is a helluva lot more discouraging than 16-0, especially when your defense showed grit in the red zone.
We’ll have to jump on them early and not let off the gas if we’re going to see this one play out how OU, UGA and Aggy played out.

Our RPO and option-routes in the passing game should serve LSU well in this one. If Clemson does something unexpected, we have the ability to adjust mid-play and take advantage. An nobody is better at doing that than Burreaux.

Watched the Fiesta Bowl replay too.
How the hell OSU blew that game is beyond me. Divine intervention...Dabo was right. LOL

There’s watching games to enjoy them and then there’s watching games FOR things and analyzing it.
I’ve known a few things listed for quite a while.
There are also different levels of analyzing a game. I like to analyze the entire flow and changes in momentum of a game by recognizing the timing of play-calls, scheme/personnel changes, penalties, and turnovers.
Then there’s breaking down each play and recognizing what worked, didn’t work, and why.

Our O line will keep Burrow upright, no matter what Clemson does. And that means we win big, end of story. 48-28.

unless BV can get to us with 4 or keep joe off field they are in deep shite
we will contain TL.
his ability to pass downfield and keep drives going was weak.
they pass and run blitzed all game. lots of 6 man blitzes.
does not matter if they play zone, cover 0, 1, or 2 under
burrow has and will beat all that.
