I know it's very bad but I just don't know much about it. what is the typical recovery time, long term effects, etc from this type of injury?
to reiterate I know that 3 fractured vertebrae is an awful injury; I'm just curious what the few posters with any medical background or anyone who's had something similar had to offer.

It varies tremendously. Compression fractures typically are watch and wait type of injuries. They start getting complicated if the fractures are unstable (which they weren't or he would have already had surgery) or if the fragments push back and compress on the spinal cord or neural structures. They can be painful and often lead to chronic pain in patients. We don't even know what part of the spine the fractures are in. I'm guessing the neck.
ETA - there are lots of smaller fractures that involve the spinous or transverse processes (bony projections off of the vertebrae). Those typically aren't treated surgically...just pain control. The point is there are a lot of different vertebral fractures and no one, other than his doctor, really knows how severe they are.

Only one answer., it depends. It is definitely not as bad as broken.

Could mean not much to paralysis. Impossible to know without details of the fractures.

It also depends on which vertebrae were fractured. It doesn't sound like he has any neurological effects so far. If its cervical vertebrae, you're talking about much more serious complications.

It would seem that if they were released in 2 hours that they are choosing the wrong people to sue if the injuries are significant (ie they would need to be going after the hospital and doctor)

Among the many rumors and stories on here the last 5 days, somebody posted it was thoracic vertebrae, like T8-T10 or something.
But who really knows except the guy with the injury.

Everyone has messed up vertebrae. Some have pain. Some don't .
Some have a lot of pain with minor damage . Some are pain free with a lot of damage.
Case by case.

Having had two back surgeries this is a big deal. He could have problems in the future from this injury. Just because he may not feel them now doesn't mean reprocussions of this stupid fight won't bother him in the future.

Of course a good lawyer is going to point out the futre pain and suffering that this type of injury can cause. Someone may be in alot of trouble. If and i say if it was caused by a kick to the head.
