Also lsu2006, Hester is a perfect example that a white running back in this day and age can be a thousand-yard rusher in college football. For the people doubting that Cannon would make it in this day and age, just look at Hester. It's true that black people are more athletic than white people, and are faster/more agile. That's why 99% of starting running backs in football are black. I'm not racist at all, so trust me, this isn't a race statement. Like I said, Hester is not as talented or dynamic as Cannon was, but the fact that he was a white running back who was successful in the SEC, especially in this era, you could call him a semi-Cannon lol.

I'll tell you who COULD have been....
Cecil the Diesel.
And who MIGHT (hopefully) be....
The 'Nette
Other votes: Patrick Peterson, Bert Jones, Charlie Alexander, Wendell Davis, Michael Brooks,
Josh Reed, Tommy Casanova, Ronnie Estay, Jamarucus Russell, Honey Badger, Glenn

Dude, will you just drop the black/white shite already? I hate to humor you on this, but name some other recent successful white running backs?

No one is doubting Cannon's ability. And using Hester as an example is stupid, because they were completely different athletes. They are both white and played for LSU. These are the only similarities.

No, you couldn't. He was a really good and dependable running back on a great team. Cannon was a transcendent superstar that could have excelled in multiple eras in multiple sports. Just stop.

Everyone that saw him play agrees.
Everyone that saw him play is old and biased. The truth is we'll never know for sure but I do know people tend to romanticize the past. I'm sure he could be a decent player today but I have serious doubts he could hit .360 in today's game.

Do yourself a favor and watch Ken Burns' Baseball.
Or learn something about Ted Williams.

Okay okay lsu2006, obviously my Hester comparison did not get the reaction I thought it would, and maybe it would have been better to think that comparison through more before I posted it, oh well, we're all allowed quick-fire, not-given-much thought posts sometimes lol. To answer your first question, the only other successful white running back in recent history that I can think of is Toby Gearhart when he played at Stanford. Danny Woodhead set a bunch of records but he played Division III football.
And I wasn't trying to over-state the race thing, I'm just saying, in this age of super-fast, athletic Afro-American running backs, it's impressive for a white running back to do well, that's all I'm saying, the race comparison ends there!

never saw him play, but I saw a clip of him putting on a hitting demo when he was about 53 and managing the Senators, some people were heckling him before a game, and he picked up a bat, cold turkey, no warm up, and put all of the players to shame, granted it was bp, but it's what every one else was swinging at, ball came off his bat differently, even sounded different, at 53

It's one of my favorite documentaries but you're lying to yourself if you don't think that era get's overly romanticized.

I've never seen any college defender play the way TM7 did his sophomore year. We likely would have been 8-4 or worse without him. I still wonder where he finishes in the Heisman voting without the suspension (making top 5 regardless).
That said, it's only one stellar year (+ freshman bowl game) up against careers.

Most of this board hasn't watched the full careers of guys like Cannon or Casanova, so those votes are based on accolades, hearsay, and a few highlights on youtube or VHS.
Not to diminish what those guys did, just saying, I don't really know how good they were, because i couldn't watch them season after season.
Based on what i've actually witnessed -
TM7
It was truly unbelievable how much he could change a game from the nickel spot and punt returner.

just to throw some fuel on this argument over black v. white, old gen. v. modern, you've got to factor in medical technology, what was career ending back then is a minor inconvenience these days, equipment is better now, conditions were tougher then, rosters smaller, fewer teams, careers were shorter, etc.

Besides being the best safety I in the country Casanova was also a great punt returner, played RB and when LSU played Notre Dame he covered All American Tom Gatewood and shut him down until Gatewood caught a tipped pass late in the game.
I believe Casanova rushed for over 200 yards in the spring game.
Also, Cannon likely would have been bigger and faster had he grown up in this day & age with all of the specialized diets, supplements and exercise/weight training.
Bert Jones was the best QB in the country and would have had a hall of same college career if LSU would have let him play all the time & thrown the ball. Of not for an arm injury he would also be an NFL hall of famer.
Stovall was beat out for the Heisman by a few votes and was all all pro safety with the Cardinals.
Johnny Robinson is an NFL hall of Famer as is Jimmy Taylor. Steve van Buren as well. Faulk will likely be a CFB hall of Famer one day like Charles Alexander.

Okay, we all know who the greatest LSU football player ever is, no debating that at all, that honor goes to Billy Cannon.
I could make a strong case for Glenn Dorsey.
He certainly had a more decorated career. And also won a NC.
